Konold, Schipke, Klein and Myers top WISSOTA class action Friday at Brown County Speedway

By Spencer Heupel

ABERDEEN, SD (August 30) -The opening night of the Agtegra Big Buck Nationals roared to life at Brown County Speedway. It was a hot one on and off the track, with 115 drivers set to do battle among five classes.

Jarod Klein, Stewart Schipke, Grady Myers and Tony Konold found themselves in victory lane for their respective WISSOTA Dirt Track Series classes, while Chad Becker scored the Tri-State wins.

The first feature of the night was a makeup feature for the Tri-State Late Models from June 7. In what was a caution-filled affair; Becker came from 17th to score the win.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were up next with 22 drivers on hand. Grady Myers and Billie Christ brought the field to green, with Myers grabbing the lead. The field was frozen on lap three due to caution for Ashley Wampler, who had a flat left-front tire.

On the restart, the top four began to check out from the rest of the field. Christ was putting the pressure on Myers as they ran separate lines. Just as Christ made a bid for the lead, caution struck once again, with Eric Melhaff spinning.

Following the ensuing restart there were three and four-wide battles throughout the field as Christ once again tried to move past Myers. Myers was too good on the bottom, however, and held his advantage. As they came to the white flag, caution struck again with Cory Moser losing his left rear tire. The caution set up a two-lap shootout and Myers checked out on the restart. Myers’ win is his first in 2024 and first ever at BCS. Christ, Jayden Bogh, Kasey Ussatis and Kyle Bertram were top-five finishers.

Next up were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with 23 drivers in attendance. It was a pair of North Dakota drivers in Jarod Klein and Ryan Ost bringing the field to green. Klein grabbed the lead on the opening lap and Derek Rieck took second; the pair began to check out early.

An early caution on lap three re-racked the field, but Klein and Rieck once again checked out. The track was very bottom dominant and the lead duo caught traffic with only five to go. Just as Klein began to work the traffic, a lapped car spun in front of him, and Klein made contact with the lapper; luckily it didn’t cause major damage.

The final restart with three to go proved to be Klein’s best one as he opened a straightaway lead on the field and went on to score his first feature win at BCS this year.

Tony Konold (Cody Papke Photo)

The WISSOTA Modifieds followed up with 17 drivers in the pit area. Joseph Thomas and Tony Konold brought the field to life, with Konold taking the lead on lap two. The first caution flag struck on lap four with a two-car wreck. The caution bred more cautions as three separate attempts at the restart ended under yellow.

The fourth attempt was finally successful as the field ticked off the laps, which allowed Mike Stearns to move to second. Konold and Stearns broke away from the field, however caution struck again on lap 10.

Konold and Stearns broke away once again following the restart. The lead duo found themselves in lapped traffic with three to go. The traffic allowed Stearns to get to Konold’s bumper. After taking the white flag, Stearns threw a slider into turn three, but ended up looping it in turn four. Konold won with Dale Ames and Nate Heinrich in the top three. Kent Arment and Cayden Schmeling were top-five finishers. It was Konold’s first win at BCS this season.

Stewart Schipke (Cody Papke Photo)

The WISSOTA Super Stocks followed up with 17 drivers on hand. It was a pair of Aberdeen drivers on the front row with Dominique Menzia and Stewart Schipke leading the way. Schipke grabbed the lead on the opening lap. Caution struck on lap three from a single car spin, and the ensuing restart was not good as two separate multi-car pileups kept the field at a standstill.

Back under green, Jeremy North now began to challenge Schipke for the lead. The lead duo caught traffic at the halfway point and began working through it. The traffic became heavy with four to go; Matt Johnson closed in to make it a three-car battle until caution struck a lap later for a single car spin. Under caution it was noticed that Johnson had a flat left front, but he opted to stay out.

The restart with three to go was an intense one as Schipke ran the top and Johnson rolled the bottom, racing side by side for the closing laps until Johnson bobbled on the bottom on the white flag, giving the lead and win to Schipke, his second win at BCS this year. North, Johnson, Dominique Menzia, and Mark Abeln were top-five finishers.

The final feature of the night was the Tri-State Late Models, with 36 drivers in attendance. Josh Skorczewski and Cody Martin brought the 24-car field to green. It was a battle between Becker and Blair Nothdurft, with Becker winning. Nothdurft’s charge from 11th finished in second, Trevor Anderson was third, Skorczewski was fourth and 19th-starter Chase Alves completed the top five.
