Peterson, Gierke, Rodin, Randt and Pourrier lead the holiday weekend traffic at I-94 Speedway
By Ron Krog
FERGUS FALLS, MN (July 5) - Race fans at I-94 emr Speedway celebrated the Fourth of July weekend with fan appreciation Friday night, including $10 tickets and a very nice fireworks display. There was also great racing, as 125 cars showed up for the party. All six classes were in action and it was a very entertaining show.
WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Chase Pourrier, Levi Randt, Ryan Gierke, Tyler Peterson, and Lucas Rodin.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks had a pair of young and talented drivers on the front row, as 2023 track champion Cole Greseth and Levi Randt set the pace. Randt slipped ahead early, but Cory Dykhoff came calling and took over out front just four laps in. Dykhoff looked strong and held the lead until lap 10 of the 15 lapper when he lost a tire.
On the restart, Randt held the lead with Greseth, Tyler Klugman and Eric Riley close behind. Then, with two laps left, Riley caught Randt and was alongside the young gun, but Randt drove a tremendous race for his first win. Riley was second, Davey Kruchten grabbed third, Klugman was fourth and Greseth was fifth in the 24-car race.
A nice field of 27 WISSOTA Midwest Mods also had a familiar name up front, as Landyn Randt took the early lead with several strong cars behind him. On lap four, “The Nightmare” Lucas Rodin showed up and took the lead with Matt Schow right behind him in second. A series of three cautions pulled the field together, and pretty soon point leader Nate Reinke was in the mix and into second, as Schow and Tanner Bitzan had a fantastic back-and-forth battle for third. When the checkered flew, Rodin got the win followed by Reinke, Bitzan, Tayten Blascyk, and Schow.
The WISSOTA Late Models started 29 cars in their feature with Shawn Kirwin and Ryan Engels leading the pack early. The car on the move was Shawn Meyer, as he took the lead with three laps scored. Soon enough Tyler Peterson came along, moving into second from his eighth starting spot, with Josh Zimpel third and Dave Mass moving into fourth.
With 12 laps left in the race, Peterson and Meyer were in heavy lapped traffic, with Peterson taking the lead, and a lap later Mass got by Zimpel for third. Cole Schill, who started 13th, was on the charge and moved to third, while Mass raced into second. Peterson held on for the win with Mass, Schill, Meyer and 23rd-starter Chad Becker in the top five in an amazing run.
It was not a big field of WISSOTA Modifieds, with 15 cars on hand, but it was not lacking in talent. Early on Tyler Peterson took the lead with Avery Anderson, Ryan Gierke and a host of others going at it hard. Peterson and Gierke fought back and forth until Gierke took the top spot. Then Brady Gerdes, who had been in a dandy battle with Travis Saurer, joined in and Gerdes took the lead as the two swapped spots several times. Peterson’s car seemingly began to fade, as Saurer, Brendan Blascyk, and Dusty Bitzan all gave the fans their money’s worth.
With the checkered in the air, Gierke got the win just ahead of Gerdes and a charging Saurer, a sight that had fans off their seats.
The smallest class of the night was the WISSOTA Hornets, but they had a wild feature, with only three of the 10 cars finished. There were tough wrecks involving Tylar Pourrier and Madison DeNoble, who went for a wild ride and luckily was okay. In the end, Chase Pourrier grabbed his fourth win of the year.
A nice field of 20 Cliff Viessman Gen X Late Models put on a great race with Joe Thomas grabbing the win.
I-94 thanks Quality Circuits for sponsoring the fireworks again as they do every year, and also Bobcat of Morris and Village Bank for their sponsorship.
