River Cities racers rocket through third night of the season; Peterson, Strand, Dietzler and Brauer the best of the bunch on Friday

By Steven Young

GRAND FORKS, ND (May 31) - Week three of racing at “The Bullring” is in the books and it was another action-packed night, with five features contested among the four weekly classes. In its 70th year of weekly racing action, River Cities Speedway victory lane welcomed WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners Tyler Peterson, Dustin Strand, Jamie Dietzler, and Braden Brauer.

There were double Late Model features Friday, with a makeup program on tap and a regular card of 36 NLRA WISSOTA Late Models signing in for the first series race of the season.

In the first feature, Cole Schill and Joey Pederson led 25 Late Models at the drop of the green. Schill led the opening lap and was followed by Pederson and Ryan Corbett.

Schill continued to lead following a lap four restart while Corbett took the second spot. The race continued after a pair of cautions on lap seven. The best battle at that point was among Mike Balcaen, Mike Greseth and eighth-stater Tyler Peterson, as they went three wide in a battle for fourth.

Peterson won that battle and reeled in Schill and Corbett as the leaders began working traffic. In the closing laps, Peterson took advantage of the traffic and took the lead for good with three to go, continuing on for his first win at the race track in 2024. Corbett finished second with Schill third, Greseth fourth and Joey Pederson fifth.

In the makeup feature, Dustin Strand returned from a blown engine in his heat race to share the front row with Blake Anderson.

Strand took the point of the start with Corbett again moving into the runner-up spot. Rookie Tucker Pederson and his father Joey battled for third as Strand pulled away from the rest of the field.

Brody Troftgruben joined the Pedersons in their battle for the podium spot, as the leaders worked through thick lapped traffic.

Strand put seven lapped cars between himself and Corbett in the closing laps to pick up the victory. Troftgruben took second, with Corbett, Joey Pederson and 12th-starting Lance Schill completing the top five.

Jamie Dietzler (Steven Young Photo)

Hunter Hougard and Alex Johnson led the field to green in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event. Jamie Dietzler and Nate Raasakka moved into second and third respectively in the opening laps of the race, while Hougard built a straightaway advantage through five circuits.

Dietzler started reeling in Hougard and a battle for the lead ensued, while Jory Berg moved in on Raasakka in a bid for third.

Dietzler's car reacted better to the tricky track surface around the midway point and he made his move with nine to go, taking the lead on the outside of Hougard. Berg and Austin Hunter also made it past Hougard, completing the top five.

Dietzler went on to win the feature, which went green-to-checkered, over Raasakka, Berg, Hunter, and Hoguard.

Braden Brauer (Steven Young Photo)

The WISSOTA Street Stock feature was marred by cautions including two red flags, but Josh Barker and John Halverson led the field to green to start.

Barker led through the midway point before Halverson took the lead coming off of turn four. Braden Brauer followed Halverson into second as Barker retired with mechanical woes.

As Barker slowed, Brauer took the lead on the final restart with seven to go and brought Seth Klostreich with him into second.

Brauer continued on to victory over Klostreich, Halverson, Trey Hess, and Weston Ramsrud.

Mark Dobmeier won in the first Wayne Anderson Cup qualifier in the NOSA Outlaw Sprints.
