Chernosky churns up some Modified success while Simpson looks Super and Monteith bites Thunder City Mid Mods

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (June 12) - Rick Simpson, Kevin Monteith, and Cole Chernosky were the head of the class on Wednesday night at Thunder City Speedway in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action, while the Street Stock victor was decided in the tech shed, with A.J. Kellar topping that feature.

In that WISSOTA Street Stock feature, B.J. Kapush led the field to the green flag from the pole. He was the early leader ahead of a hornet’s nest for second among David Mitchell, Johnny Staal, eighth-starter Darren Wolframe and Kellar in the top five.

Wolframe moved to second about a lap later, but was quickly under fire from Mitchell and Kellar for the runner-up spot, as they raced three wide for a full lap. Kellar moved into second and looked ahead toward the leader. He drove by Kapush and took sole position of the top spot one lap later. Kyle Bolt moved past Wolframe for second, Mitchell was fourth, while Kapush Justin Tougas battled for fifth.

Several green-flag laps passed by without incident, and the leaders began to make their way through the back of the field. Bolt was able to close in on Kellar, with Kellar better than Bolt in turns one and two, and Bolt better in three and four. With just two to go, Kellar could not get past a lapped car and Bolt used that to his advantage, driving by on the outside. Bolt took the apparent win, but in post-race tech inspection, the win was awarded to Kellar. Wolframe was second, Mitchell was third, Tougas was fourth from 11th at the start, and Kapush finished out the top five.

Rick Simpson (Dennis Orr Photo)

Polesitter Tom Smart was the leader of lap one when the WISSOTA Super Stocks began their feature. Nathan Roy was second, and Jeremy Britten slipped back to third before the yellow flew for a spun racer with just a few laps complete.

Smart led the field back to green, a start that was negated due to another dustup in the field.

Back under the green, Smart led Britten and Roy in the top three. John Garrity was fourth, as Danny Young and Rick Simpson battled for top-five spots, with the middle of the pack three and four-wide for spots.

One lap later the top five were two and three wide for position, but a caution for MacKenzie Holmwood broke up the party. Following the restart, Simpson blasted along the high side and into the lead to complete the lap. Britten was third, Roy was fourth and Young was close behind in fifth. Another caution brought the action to a standstill at about the halfway point.

Simpson led the field back to green, with Roy and Smart side by side for second. Behind them, Young and Toppozini were side by side for fourth and fifth.

Young moved by Roy about two laps later for second, bringing Toppozini along with him into third. Another caution regrouped the field with less than a handful of laps to go.

Simpson, who started ninth, drove off to the eventual victory following the final restart, ahead of Young, Toppozini, Roy and Smart in the top five.

Kevin Monteith (Dennis Orr Photo)

Kolby Reed and Matthew Mitchell led the WISSOTA Midwest Mods to the green flag. Cole Chernosky was on the move early from fifth, taking the lead about two laps into the program. Reed then came under fire from Kevin Monteith, who took the second spot and set out after Chernosky. Tanner Henderson and David Simpson were close behind in the top five at the halfway point.

Chernosky’s lead was substantial over Monteith, Henderson and Simpson. Simpson was just about to make the pass when a caution reset the field.

Chernosky was back out to the lead under green, while Monteith and Henderson fought side by side for second. Simpson was fourth right on their bumpers. Another yellow brought the field to a halt.

Following the restart, Chernosky was under heavy pressure from first Henderson, and then Monteith and Simpson, side by side, during the white flag lap. As the field thundered into turns three and four, Monteith dove down to the inside and took command with Simpson also getting by Chernosky for second at the checkered flag. Henderson was fourth, and 16th-starter Trenton Woodbeck completed his charge in fifth.

In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Cole Chernosky had his moment of redemption from the closing laps in the Midwest Mods, as he started fourth and drove to the lead a lap or so into the feature. He then set off to the victory and withstood a green, white, checkered finish to garner the win ahead of last week’s winner Riley Matthews, Joel Cryderman, Curtis Stieh and Colin Chascuk in the top five.

Sydney Chaschuk won in the track’s Hornet class.
