Brauer bolts to another bullring win but rain ruins larger portion of River Cities features
By Steven Young
GRAND FORKS, ND (June 14) - It's no secret that it's been a difficult beginning to the 70th season of weekly racing action in Grand Forks as another night of the “hurry-up offense” against Mother Nature ended with two features complete, but three postponed due to rain.
The action has lived up to the Bullring's high standards this season and did so again as the skies darkened Friday night. Braden Brauer won the WISSOTA Street Stock feature and Tye Wilke won the Red River Sprint Series IMCA Sprint Car main event.
Chris Ekren and Greg Jose led the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature to green as Jose looked to win his second feature of the season with rain closing in on the Bullring. Jose took the lead from the outset as Ekren held off John Halvorson and Braden Brauer for second.
Brauer went from third to first following a lap three caution and began to pull away from the rest of the field. Weston Ramsrud moved his “Ol’ Relic” to the inside of Cole Greseth in a bid to complete the podium.
Greseth won that battle and began to hunt down Jose for second in traffic at the midway point. Greseth moved into second with eight to go as Ramsrud and Trey Hess entered into a three-car battle for third. Ramsrud and Jose went side by side for a number of laps as Brauer completed his clinic up front.
Brauer won his second feature in a row at the Bullring, and third overall, over Greseth, Ramsrud, Jose, and Hess.
Amelia Eisenschenk started on the pole of the 20-lap Red River Sprint Series feature, looking to join Presley Truedson and Kelsi Pederson as the third female driver to win a feature at the Bullring. Defending Red River Sprint Series champion Tye Wilke started to her outside, but both were passed by Armour, SD driver Koby Werkmeister, who led the opening lap.
Wilke and Eisenschenk were side by side on the second lap, with Wilke taking the spot. Wilke began to reel in Werkmeister again as the leaders worked traffic early in the race.
With 11 to go, Wilke used the top in heavy traffic to take the lead back from Werkmeister. As Wilke started to pull away, Andy Pake’s performance was worth the price of admission, throwing sliders from his seventh starting spot and eventually winning hard-charger honors.
Wilke continued on for his first Bullring victory over Werkmeister, Pake, Ty Hanten, and Dan Griep in the top five. The race went green to checkered and was completed in just over four minutes.
The WISSOTA Modified, Happy Harry's WISSOTA Midwest Mod, and Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car features were postponed due to rain.
Racing action continues next week with three big events running during the annual Greater Grand Forks Fair. Friday night includes the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints return and they will be joined by the WISSOTA Midwest Mods as the Rebel Mod Tour comes to the Bullring.
The NOSA Sprints are back Saturday night and will be joined by the NLSA Lightning Sprints. Sunday a special Baja Race helps bring the fair to a close.
