Cain, Moelter and Chernosky chase and capture the checkered on opening night of Thunder City’s Dirt Track Nationals

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (September 20) - Dave Cain, William Moelter, and Cole Chernosky were the big winners in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action to open the Dirt Track Nationals at Thunder City Speedway Friday night, as the track welcomed a giant field to the Thunder Bay-area speedplant for its two-day special.

Cain started on the pole of the WISSOTA Modified feature and led start to finish, but had some heat from fellow front-row starter Cole Chernosky in the closing laps through lapped traffic. Cain held on to capture the victory, however, ahead of Chernosky, eighth-starter Jody Bellefeuille, Joel Cryderman, and Nick Oreskovich in the top five.

National Championship points leader Dexton Koch started on the pole of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, leading for a good chunk of the race as farther back Chernosky worked his way forward from sixth at the start. He battled side by side with Tim Johnson for second for several laps, taking the spot at about the halfway point of the feature. Following a restart with eight laps to go, Chernosky used the low side in turns one and two and the high side into turns three and four, and it paid dividends; he drove by Koch in turns three and four with the white flag in the air, and narrowly held on to take the checkered flag. Johnson was right on their heels in third, Kyle Copp was fourth and DJ Keeler was fifth.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Moelter made his move to the inside of race-long leader Kolby Reed around lap 15 as they raced out of turn two to take the lead and he drove on to the eventual victory. Reed had to settle for second, while Marcus Dunbar improved four spots to third. Jason VandeKamp charged his way from 18th on the starting grid to finish fourth, while Tanner Ulakovic was fifth.

The Street Stocks and Hornets raced heat races only on Friday night, with their features set for Saturday night’s finale.
