BEMIDJI, MN (September 21) - The coming of autumn in the world of stock car racing means it’s “specials” season. Bemidji Speedway has one of the longest running specials in WISSOTA Auto Racing with the Paul Bunyan Stampede in its 45th year.

More than 120 cars in eight classes filled the pits with campers and haulers on a near perfect fall weekend. Drivers from Canada, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota were on hand for the speedway’s two-day finale.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners on Saturday night included Lance Schilling, Dalton Carlson, Aaron Blacklance, Devyn Weleski, Dean Larson, Kade Leeper and Megan Vernlund.

Justin Barsness and Shannon George led the field to green in the WISSOTA Pure Stocks, with Barsness grabbing the early lead followed by George, Chaston Finckbone, Brent Mindock and Kevin Baumgarner.

Working through traffic from his third-row start, Kade Leeper made several passes—often using the high line—to take the lead. Several cautions for spins and crashes kept their portion of the program at a stop-and-go pace, but Leeper controlled the field to take home the first feature of the Stampede. Justin Barsness, Baumgarner, Finckbone, and Dustin Puffe were top-five finishers.

Devyn Weleski (Lisa Rhen Photo)

For the first time in many years the WISSOTA Street Stocks were invited to be part of the weekend, and they were led to the green by Jeremy Gust and Scotty Messner. Gust was the early leader followed by Messner, Billy Binkley, Chris Dudley and Devyn Weleski. With Gust out front, a three-wide battle ensued for second.

As the battle waged, Binkley raced into the lead with Messner second and Dudley and Gust door to door for third. As Binkley was charging out of turn two, his Streeter flipped over on the back straight; he was okay and returned to the rear of the field.

Following the restart, Weleski blasted up to the lead. He picked up the win and celebrated in victory lane with family. Messner, Gust, Courtney Rose and Dudley finished in the top five.

Megan Vernlund (Lisa Rhen Photo)

On track next were the WISSOTA Hornets, led to green by Jayme Gordon and JJ Morton. Gordon took the lead with Chris Isensee moving into second. Russell Kiker Jr. slid up high in turn two and dropped back, while Chad Reller and Megan Vernlund tangled in a wild and frenzied race.

The top five racers were all in a bunch with Gordon, Vernlund, Kiker Jr., Isensee and Brady Fosso in contention. Vernlund had the power and the line to take the lead and the win in a hard-fought race. Reller was second with Kiker Jr., Fosso and Isensee trailing.

Aaron Blacklance (Lisa Rhen Photo)

In the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Aaron Blacklance was the early leader ahead of Skyler Smith, Randy Haupt, Brennan Schmidt and Gary James Nelson in the top five. Several crashes slowed the action and when racing resumed, Blacklance was clearly the favorite. He picked up the Stampede hardware ahead of Smith, Schmidt, Nelson, and Michael Blevins, Sr. in the top five.

Alan Olafson and Lance Schilling entered turn four and down the front straight to the green flag to start the WISSOTA Modified feature. The front-row raced side by side for the first lap in intense racing action, with Schilling powering into the lead on lap two. Olafson, Josh Beaulieu, Jeff Reed and Ryan Schroeder were the early top five. Schroeder later spun and was sent to the rear of the field for a restart.

Back under green, Reed powered up and passed Beaulieu as Schilling ran away from the field out front. Rick Jacobson made strong moves from his fourth-row starting spot and entered the top five late, passing Beaulieu for fourth. Schilling cruised to the feature win with Olafson, Reed, Jacobson and Beaulieu trailing in the top five.

Dean Larson (Lisa Rhen Photo)

National points leader Dean Larson was on the pole to start the WISSOTA Mod Four feature, with Brian Feda to his right. A multi-car crash on the front straight sent Ashton Schwinn to the rear for the restart.

Larson blasted out front back under green with Blake Hawker, Feda, Brooklyn Vernlund and Blake Erickson in the top five. Schwinn made a comeback and charged into fifth, then took fourth, and finally settled into third.

It was Larson’s race, however, as he won by a quarter lap. Hawker, Schwinn, Conrad Schwinn and Feda were top-five finishers.

Dalton Carlson (Lisa Rhen Photo)

The WISSOTA Super Stocks were led to green by Robert Lore and Tim Carlson, who was making a rare racing appearance. Lore raced to the lead with Matt Sparby, Tim Carlson, Dalton Carlson and John Farrington trailing.

Following a caution Dalton Carlson moved up into second as Nic Lewis passed Farrington for fourth. Andy LaBarge raced up from his fourth-row starting position into the top five, passing Farrington, and then getting by Ellen Lange for third.

As the leaders began lapping slower traffic, Dalton Carlson used a high-side pass to take the lead. Carlson held on to take the opening night feature win. Sparby, LaBarge, Lore, and Lange rounded out the top five.

In the Mini Stocks, Conrad Schwinn took the checkered flag for the win with son Ashton second. Justin Honer, Hayden Engen and Connor Drewry finished in the top five.

Kiker, Hawker and Messner make it to victory lane at Bemidji finale, along with Smith, LaBarge and Thomas

By Dennis Peterson

BEMIDJI, MN (September 22) - It was clear cool and sunny Sunday for the second day of Paul Bunyan Stampede action at Bemidji Speedway. Once again the car count was high, with close to 120 cars on hand for the final race of the 2024 racing season at Bemidji.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Joseph Thomas, Andy LaBarge, Skyler Smith, Scotty Messner, Blake Hawker, and Russell Kiker, Jr.

Deryk Weleski and Kade Leeper led the pack of WISSOTA Pure Stocks to the green flag for their feature, with Leeper taking the lead early ahead of Weleski, Brent Mindock, Dustin Puffe and Justin Barsness.

Following early cautions, Leeper was out in front when Weleski barrel rolled in turns three and four; Weleski was okay, but out of the race. In the process Dustin Puffe suffered severe damage and was forced to pit and return tailback. Puffe was able to gain a few positions in the last few laps as Leeper took the checkered flag out front. Several DQs and pending DQs kept the results unofficial, and at press time no final standings were available.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were next on track, led to green with Tommy Pogones and Scotty Messner in row one. Messner raced to the top side and into the lead with Pogones, Chris Dudley, Billy Binkley and Jeremy Gust in the top five. Dudley lost his grip and slid up and dropped back in turn three.

Farther back, visitor Weston Ramsrud steadily worked toward the front, making good use of the top of the track. Ramsrud made his way to second, but didn’t have enough to get by Messner, who took the checkered flag for the win. Ramsrud, Pogones, Binkley, and Gust finished in the top five.

Russell Kiker (Lisa Rhen Photo)

Brady Fosso and Jayme Gordon led the WISSOTA Hornets to the green flag. Fosso moved into the top spot, with Gordon, Chad Reller, Russell Kiker, Jr. and Chris Isensee in the top five early on. Racing side by side, the top four flew around the track. Kiker moved to the top of the track and took over the lead, with Travis Olafson moving up into third as Fosso dropped back to fifth. Kiker took the commanding victory ahead of Reller, Gordon, Olafson and Fosso in the top five.

Skyler Smith (Lisa Rhen Photo)

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature hit the track, led to green by Skyler Smith on the pole and Landon Gross to his right. Smith raced to the lead with Michael Blevins, Sr. muscling into second, followed by Gross. A couple of cautions slowed the racing but Smith held on following each restart.

Eric Anderson, who started in the fourth row, worked his way into fourth as Doyle Erickson raced from the ninth spot into the top five. Smith picked up the win and celebrated in victory lane with his family. Blevins Sr., Gross, Anderson and Erickson trailed in the top five.

Joseph Thomas (Lisa Rhen Photo)

The mighty WISSOTA Modifieds were up next, led by Mike Stearns and Joseph Thomas in row one. Stearns looked awesome in racing to the lead with Thomas, Josh Beaulieu, Jeff Reed and Tanner Williamson trailing in the top five.

Williamson tried the high line and dropped back, handing fifth to Alan Olafson. That was short-lived as Cole Chernosky raced low in turns three and four into fifth.

Stearns and Thomas were way out front, flying around the track in an impressive show of power and skill. Stearns opened up five-car-length lead over Thomas, but a Farrington spin brought the field back together for a restart. Reed had to pit for a tire change and returned tailback.

With the field once again in tight formation Thomas raced high and Beaulieu went to the low side, passing Stearns and racing into first and second, respectively. A late caution created one more restart, with cars careening over turn one and debris on the track. Stearns pitted, bringing an end to a brilliant night of racing. Thomas went on to claim the victory with Beaulieu second. A three-wide battle for third was won by Chernosky. Williamson and Reed were fourth and fifth.

Blake Hawker (Lisa Rhen Photo)

Fourteen WISSOTA Mod Fours were led on track by Blake Hawker and Tommy Bawden. Hawker took the lead with Bawden, Dean Larson, Patrich Specht and Rowan Tram in the top five. Hawker ran away from the field, with the top-five runners each about a two car lengths ahead of the other. The race went flag to flag with Hawker the winner. Bawden, Larson, Specht and Luke Erlandson trailed.

Andy LaBarge (Lisa Rhen Photo)

Andy LaBarge and Nic Lewis led the pack of WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag with LaBarge taking the lead ahead of Lewis, Nathan Sletto, Matt Sparby and Robert Lore in the top five. Lewis and Sletto raced door to door for second, before an eight-car crash in turn one brought out the caution flag, with Sparby sent tailback.

Fourth-row starter Dalton Carlson fought into the top five following the restart. LaBarge was way out front in a commanding position and cruised to the victory. Carlson finished second with Sletto, Lewis and Cameron Labelle fifth.

Connor Drewry took home the victory in the track’s Mini Stocks class, as the Schwinns—Conrad and son Ashton—dueled for second, with the senior Conrad taking bragging rights over son Ashton. Justin Honer was fourth and Waylon Current was fifth to round out action Sunday.
