GRAND FORKS, ND (September 5) - It was a huge opening night for racers on hand for the John Seitz Memorial weekend at River Cities Speedway Thursday, as the first of three nights of action kicked off with feature racing in the WISSOTA Modifieds, Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, and Late Models. The Super Stocks ran heat races leading up to Friday’s feature for the class. The Late Model feature also served as the NLRA series finale, known as the Prelude to the Johnny, as well as the Howie Schill Memorial. The Schill Memorial was rained out earlier this season at Red River Valley Speedway and moved to Thursday night of the Seitz.
WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Dustin Strand, Tyler Peterson, Blake Adams, and Cole Greseth.
Cole Greseth was the early leader from the pole in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, but a first-lap caution for Greg Jose, who spun after hitting an infield tire, regrouped the field early on.
Greseth led the field back to green. Braden Brauer and Darek Turner were side by side for second before another caution brought the field to a halt.
It was back to the lead for Greseth after the drop of the green, as Brauer made his way by Turner for second. Nick Shumansky was fourth and Levi Randt completed the early top five with 15 laps to go. Parker Anderson, who started 14th, was already sixth.
With five more laps complete, Greseth had slightly more than a 1-second lead ahead of Brauer, while Turner held third, Anderson was up into fourth, and Shumansky slipped back to fifth.
Out front, Greseth began to catch lapped traffic with seven laps left on the board. Greseth struggled to get by Shane Swenson, and Brauer closed in quickly. A caution fell, bringing the field to a halt and Greseth was out front solo once again.
Back under green, Greseth pulled away slightly from Brauer, but Brauer quickly fought back and was on the bumper of Greseth before another caution turned the frontstretch into a parking lot.
The field regrouped for a five-lap shootout, led once again by Greseth. Brauer went to the high side and held second, as Turner struggled with the handling on his car and came under fire from Anderson for third. Twenty-second starter Hunter Carter was up into fifth.
Greseth checked out a bit from Brauer, as he drove on to the victory, while Anderson was third. Carter’s charge finished in fourth, and Seth Klostreich was fifth at the finish.
Blake Adams and Jason Halverson led the field to the green flag in the WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature for their 20-lap bout. Adams was the early leader, with Halverson settling into second. Austin Overwater was third, Phil Christlieb fourth and Bailey Cousins fifth before the first caution fell across the field.
Adams led the restart, as Overwater moved into second under heavy pressure from Halverson. Matt Schow got by Cousins into the top five.
Schow used the next lap to move into second, and set off after Adams, as Overwater and Halverson argued over third with Halverson retaining the spot. Cousins was fifth. A caution fell with nine laps complete.
Back under green Adams had heavy pressure from Schow and Halverson for the lead, before another frontstretch incident brought out the yellow once more. One lap was scored following the restart before another spin on the track brought the field back to a standstill.
The field reset with nine to go, with Adams in the lead. Halverson went to the high side to battle for first with Adams, as Schow was tucked to the inside. Schow moved into second along the bottom, then moved back up top to get the lead from Adams on the next lap. However, just after the pass was made into turn one, his left rear tire sheared off and Schow spun in-between turns one and two with six laps to go.
Adams jumped back out to the lead for the restart, as Blacklance and Halverson battled side by side for second. Reise Stenberg moved to fourth, and Brandon Rehill was fifth with four to go. Austin Hunter moved into the top five past Rehill about a lap later.
Adams checked out from Blacklance, who started 12th, to take the feature win. Stenberg’s charge from 19th at the start ended with a podium finish. Halverson and Hunter completed the top five.
Tyler Peterson was the early leader in the WISSOTA Modified feature, as Brock Gronwold and Jordan Duray held early top three spots. With six laps scored, the yellow fell and the field was regrouped.
Peterson drove away from the field on the restart, as Gronwold was under fire from Ward Imrie for second and Duray was close by in fourth. Cole Chernosky broke through into the top five before losing the spot to Dale Ames shortly after. A caution for a two-car wreck between Jason Strand and Jeff Nelson reracked the field.
With 10 laps scored, Peterson remained out front, with Gronwold second and Imrie, Ames and Duray three wide for top five spots behind. Another caution fell for Buzzy Adams, who had damage in turns one and two.
Peterson took off into the lead when the field was back under green, as Imrie worked past Gronwold into second and began to pressure Peterson for the top spot. Gronwold, Duray and Ames filled out the top five with nine to go. A bit farther back, Cayden Schmeling was on the move forward from ninth.
With six to go, Peterson had moved back out to a healthy 2-second lead. Imrie held second ahead of Gronwold, Ames and Duray in the top five.
Out front, Peterson was having to navigate lapped traffic with three to go before a caution fell for an incident involving Gronwold, Ames and Duray in turn four; Ames was able to continue, as was Duray, though it appeared there was damage to both race cars.
Peterson led the three-lap shootout to the checkered, with Imrie second, Ames in third, Schmeling up to fourth and Duray slipping back to fifth.
After a first-lap caution in the WISSOTA Late Models, Mike Greseth was the early leader of the feature. Another caution for Scott Greer with just one lap complete regrouped the field.
Greseth was under fire from Dustin Strand, Jeff Massingill and Sam Mars when the green dropped over the field once more; Strand moved into second, with Massingill and Mars in third and fourth. Chad Becker and Aaron Turnbull were also in the mix.
Greseth began to work his way through lapped traffic and Strand closed in quickly. They were side by side with 12 laps scored; Greseth split two lapped cars to gain a bit more of an advantage down the frontstretch, leaving Strand behind to deal with the same lapped traffic. Turnbull was now third, Massingill was fourth and Mars was fifth. With 10 to go, Todd Frank spun ahead of the top-five runners and called it a night.
Back under green, Strand was right to the bumper of Greseth as they raced with a clean race track ahead. Turnbull was third, with Mars fourth and Massingill under fire from Becker for fifth. Becker grabbed the spot about half a lap later.
With five laps to go, Strand was again to the back bumper of Greseth. Strand got the advantage to the inside down the frontstretch with two to go. Strand took the white flag with a parking lot of lapped cars ahead, but pulled down to the inside and held on for the victory ahead of Greseth. Turnbull, Mars, and Becker were top-five finishers. Strand was crowned the NLRA Series Champion, as well as the Howie Schill Memorial winner.
In preparation for Friday night’s WISSOTA Super Stock feature action, Trevor Nelson and Jordan Henkemeyer topped their respective heats.
