Chernosky, Nelson, Jensen, Puffe and Patrin go out and get ‘em at Grand Rapids on Thursday

By Shannon Reigel

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (August 1) - Grand Rapids Speedway held another nice summer night of racing on Thursday, hosting the WISSOTA Hornets, Pure Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Modifieds, and Super Stocks, as well as the Northern Renegades.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Cole Chernosky, Dustin Nelson, Joey Jensen, Dustin Puffe, and Payson Patrin.

Carey LePage and Sam Kolar were out front of the pack of 20 WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds for their feature. After two early cautions, Chernosky found his way to the front from his fifth starting spot, and held the lead for much of the race. Ninth-starter Joey Jensen was on the move, however, and Jensen caught Chernosky. They raced side by side before Jensen took the lead - and drove on to the win - with a little less than a handful of laps left. Mikey Blevins was third, with pressure along the high side from David Simpson. Mervin Castle hung on for fifth ahead of Blake Adams.

Thirteen WISSOTA Super Stocks rolled onto the track for their feature, with Ellen Lange and Dalton Carlson out front of the pack. The drivers had a rough race, with five cautions. Carlson stole the initial lead on green, but Curt Myers challenged him. Dustin Nelson, who started eighth, raced low on the track and began to make his way forward.

Near the end of the race, Myers pitted and Nelson took advantage, moving into the top spot and taking home the win. Doug Koski grabbed second from Carlson. Seventh-starter Andy LaBarge secured fourth, while Austin Blom moved past Matt Sparby to round out the top five for the evening.

Ryan Jensen was the early leader of the WISSOTA Modifieds at the drop of the green. Kevin Adams pressured Jensen side by side and grabbed the top spot, as Bob Broking raced in third and looked to the inside of Jensen. Broking took second before a caution flag was thrown for Adams, who stalled on the track. Chernosky and Kennedy Swan were also in the mix, as they fought for top-five spots. Jensen inherited the lead for the restart, and continued to lead at the halfway point.

Late in the race, Broking drove by Jensen along the high side. A lap later, Chernosky duplicated the move and displaced Jensen to third.

On the last lap of the race, as they came into the final two turns, Chernosky used a slider on Broking with a lapped car directly ahead, and powered along the outside to the victory at the checkered flag. Broking, Swan, Jensen and Josh Beaulieu were top-five finishers.

Dustin Puffe (Tom Krob Photo)

The WISSOTA Pure Stocks drove on the track, with Alex Berg and Dustin Puffe out front of the pack. Puffe was the early leader of the feature. With five laps scored, Puffe continued to lead Austin Carlson, Jake Smith and Chaston Finckbone in a heated, three-wide battle for runner-up honors. This allowed Puffe to break away a bit from the mad dash for second.

With three laps to go, Puffe continued in the lead, while Smith shook out into second ahead of Finckbone, with Carlson fourth. Just before the field took the white flag, Finckbone spun in turn four and was sent to the back.

Puff held off Smith on the restart and grabbed the victory, while Carlson finished third. Justin Barsness and Brandon Puschinsky completed the top five.

Payson Patrin (Tom Krob Photo)

Last on the track were the WISSOTA Hornets. Cade Johnson and Riley Ament started out front of the 14 drivers, with Ament the early leader. Russel Kiker, Jr. and Payson Patrin were both on the move to the front, eventually settling into second and third, respectively, as they tried to chase down Ament. Kiker was displaced to fourth by Tristen McLynn.

A caution with three laps left gave Payson Patrin the shot he needed; he drove by Ament and onto the victory with one lap left. McLynn, Ament, Kiker and 11th-starter McKenna Folstad completed the top five.

In the Northern Renegade class, Chris Lewis was victorious from his seventh starting spot.
