On first of two championship weekend nights, Becker, Arment, Nelson, Ost and Broksieck burn up Brown County Speedway

By Spencer Heupel

ABERDEEN, SD (August 23) - After a two-week hiatus due to the Brown County Fair, Brown County Speedway roared back to life for its season championship weekend with 90 drivers on hand to do battle Friday. It was a fun night in all five WISSOTA Dirt Track Series classes.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Trevor Nelson, Maria Broksieck, Ryan Ost, Chad Becker and Kent Arment.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were first to the track, with 21 drivers set to do battle. Dusty Hyatt and Maria Broksieck brought the field to green and Broksieck grabbed the lead. The track was very bottom dominant until Billie Christ found something up top and began to track down Broksieck.

The lead duo began to check out from the field and started to work through lapped traffic seven laps in. A caution then regrouped the field.

On the restart, it was more of the same, as Broksieck and Christ were set to finish the battle between themselves. Christ gave it everything to get around Broksieck, but didn’t have enough as Broksieck grabbed her 14th win of the year and fourth win in a row.

Ryan Ost (Cody Papke Photo)

Next up was the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with 18 drivers in attendance; they were led to green by Jordan Kienow and Ryan Ost. Ost did not fire at the start, forcing the outside lane to checkup and giving Kienow the lead.

It was a hard fight right away as Connor Blumhardt and Nick Perry began challenging Kienow for the lead. Blumhardt got to Kienow’s outside on multiple occasions, but never could get extra momentum to get by until caution struck on lap six.

Following the restart, Dawson Zabel made a power move from third to first in one corner and he began to check out. Zabel seemed to be on his way to the win until caution flew with two to go due to a four-car pileup in turn four.

The caution set up a two-lap shootout and it was a dandy. Ost moved back into second on the restart and was on Zabel’s bumper coming to the white flag. As the leaders went into turn three, Zabel left the bottom open for Ost, who got by. Zabel found the slick spot and looped it, as Ost grabbed the win. It was his first-ever win in a WISSOTA Midwest Modified.

Kent Arment (Cody Papke Photo)

The WISSOTA Modifieds were up next with the 14-driver field set. Tony Konold and Garrett Gross brought them to green, with Konold grabbing the lead early on. The race was a good one with multiple lanes, even though turn one was getting to be “cowboy up.”

A caution struck on lap two and after the restart, a multi-lane track came to life. Kent Arment went from fourth to first in turn one, and then went fourth to first in turns three and four again. The lead group was a heavy battle among Konold, Arment, Dale Ames, Mike Stearns and Cole Chernosky. Konold regained the lead after a few laps, but was under fire by Chernoksy and Arment the whole time.

A debris caution came out with seven to go and on the ensuing restart Konold, Chernoksy and Arment ran three wide for the lead for two laps, until Konold regained the spot. Konold began to open a gap until he caught the rut wrong in turn one and spun out on his own.

Konold’s misfortunes gave the lead to Arment. With five to go, it was a shootout among Arment, Chernoksy and Ames, and the three put on a show with slide job after slide job until the white flag came out. Arment had a big enough advantage to hold on for the win in a thrilling feature. The win is Arment’s third of the year at BCS.

Trevor Nelson (Cody Papke Photo)

Next up were the WISSOTA Super Stocks, with 15 drivers in the pits. Austin Arbogast and Luis Chavez brought the field to life and Arbogast grabbed the early advantage. Caution however struck on lap three and it became a sign of things to come.

The field restarted and as they completed the next lap, Kaden Kampa found the rut in turn one, sending him barrel-rolling four to five times. He was okay.

Trevor Nelson made a move around the outside of Arbogast on the ensuing restart to take the lead, but it was negated by another caution.

Once back under green, Nelson took the lead from Arbogast once again.

The field was able to run the rest of the way caution free. Nelson was in lapped traffic with two to go, but had a big enough lead ahead of second-place Matt Johnson. Nelson scored his 14th win of the year and fourth win at BCS.

Chad Becker (Cody Papke Photo)

The WISSOTA Late Models rounded out action with 22 drivers in attendance. Mike Rohwedder and Thomas Weisgram led the field to green, with Weisgram grabbing the early lead.

Weisgram set a fast pace and he began to work lapped traffic only five laps in. This allowed Chad Becker to close in; Becker ultimately took the lead with 13 to go.

As Becker now worked through traffic, Kent Arment closed in and took second from Weisgram and he began to reel in Becker. As the lead duo got into heavy lap traffic, Arment got to Becker’s bumper, but the pesky caution flag flew for the first time with only seven laps left.

Cautions breed cautions and after three separate attempts at restarts, the fourth attempt proved to be the last one.

On the final restart, Cole Searing became the challenger for Becker, and Searing was all over Becker for the final six laps. Searing threw a slider into turn three on the white flag lap, but Becker was too strong up on the cushion and fended off Searing. It was Becker’s 11th win of the year and fourth at BCS.
