Peterson posts Challenge Series Late Model win while Wagamon whips Mods and Swearingen sprints to MidMod win at Ogilvie

By Chris Stepan & Tami Jo Kuehn

OGILVIE, MN (August 6) - The opening night of the Northern Storm Series, highlighted by the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series, kicked off at Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, MN, with 42 WISSOTA Late Models checked in for the series opener. WISSOTA Midwest Mods and Modifieds were also part of the action.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Tyler Peterson, David Swearingen, and Clayton Wagamon.

Kyle Peterlin set the quick qualifying lap in the Late Models, with a time of 15.232 seconds around the banked oval.

Rick Niemi and Jake Redetzke earned the front row for the night’s 40-lap, $2,500-to-win feature event with Redetzke getting the upper hand on the initial start. With Redetzke out front, Billy Kendall and Niemi waged a side-by-side war for the runner-up spot, as the top three ran in close proximity to one another for the first dozen laps.

Redetzke opened up a slight gap on the battle for second while Kendall and Niemi ran side by side for runner-up from lap five through lap 15 before Tyler Peterson, who started seventh, added his name to the mix.

Peterson snuck by Kendall for third, got by Niemi for the runner-up spot on lap 20, and began to chase down Redetzke, who had built up more than a two-second advantage out front. Peterson chipped away at Redetzke’s lead lap after lap, until he was able to pull alongside Redetzke with less than 10 laps to go.

With Peterson and Redetzke battling for the lead out front, James Giossi managed to race by Niemi into third and was starting to track down the leaders until he suddenly pulled to the infield, ending his night.

All eyes were on the tussle for the top spot; Peterson finally secured the lead on lap 35 and raced away during the final five circuits for the victory. Redetzke finished second with Niemi in third. Shane Sabraski, was the rookie of the race by virtue of his fourth-place finish, while Kendall rounded out the top-five finishers in the nonstop affair.

David Swearingen (Mark Anderson Photo)

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were led to green by James Vendela and Jason VandeKamp on the front row, and when the green waved, VandeKamp shot into the lead.

The drivers then battled their way through a series of cautions, with VandeKamp holding the lead followed by David Swearingen and Justin Bassa. After 10 laps were in the books, VandeKamp had established a solid lead and prepared to navigate lapped traffic as a final yellow was triggered.

The race resumed with VandeKamp, Swearingen and Ashton Schulte three-wide for the top spot; VandeKamp edged out the point. With just five laps to go, though, Swearingen was within striking distance of VandeKamp once again. Swearingen dove low on the track and was door to door with the leader as the white flag waved high. Swearingen nosed ahead, and as the top drivers came down the front-chute, he grabbed the win by .042 seconds ahead of VandeKamp. Schulte, 15th-starter Blake Adams, and Zach Benson were top-five finishers.

Clayton Wagamon (Mark Anderson Photo)

Clayton Wagamon stole the WISSOTA Modified feature event in another classic to wrap up the night. Kennedy Swan and Nick Oreskovich led the field to the start, with racers three, four and almost five-wide as they fought for positions at the drop of the green. Oreskovich grabbed the point with Swan and Darrell Nelson in second and third as drivers settled in.

After a quick caution, Oreskovich retained the lead with Nelson in second. Wagamon made his way around Swan and then Nelson, and next took over the top spot from Oreskovich; Wagamon pulled away with the lead. Eighth-starter Ryan Gierke was on his trail, however, and with five laps to go, Gierke caught and passed Wagamon.

Wagamon kept after Gierke, and on the final lap and final turn, Gierke was stuck behind lapped traffic. Wagamon shot low on the track and took the checkered flag in a thrilling finish. He was tailed across the finish line by Gierke, Oreskovich, Jody Bellefeuille, and Swan.
