VandeKamp assumes ownership of Deer Creek’s Midwest Mod field on Saturday evening

By Todd Narveson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (July 27) - It was a hot and sultry night at Deer Creek Speedway for the RacinDirt.com Thunder Summer Series. In the lone WISSOTA-sanctioned class, Jason VandeKamp grabbed the victory in the Midwest Mods.

Colin Wittenberg led the 19-car WISSOTA Midwest Mod field to the green flag. A nine-car pileup on lap two blocked the track in turn two and brought out the yellow flag.

Wittenberg led with Jayme Hiller and Kadden Kath right on his heels back under green. Hiller pulled alongside Wittenberg on lap five, and then Kath drove past Hiller for second on lap seven. Christopher Deno used the top groove and moved to third.

Wittenberg, Kath and Deno ran three wide for the lead on lap nine, while Jason VandeKamp took fourth. Kath took the lead in turn two on the 11th circuit and VandeKamp flew to second. VandeKamp zoomed to the lead on lap 12 before the race’s final yellow flew on lap 14.

VandeKamp led the final four laps to score his ninth win of the season. Josh Bazey made a late-race charge to second after he started 11th. Joey Jensen finished in third while Deno was fourth and Kath ended up fifth.

Dustin Gulbrandson jumped from row one to lead the USRA Hobby Stock feature. A quick yellow slowed the race on lap two. Gulbrandson led, but Luke Schluetter got to second and tried to close in on the leader while back under green.

The top five ran in tight formation on lap nine. Nick Schwebach moved to third on lap 10 and Krysta Doughty charged from 11th to fourth. Schwebach moved past Schluetter for second on lap 12 as Gulbrandson pulled ahead. That all changed when a yellow flew to set up a two-lap shootout to the finish.

Gulbrandson led to the white flag with Schwebach, Schluetter and Doughty close behind. As the lead pack charged out of turn four to the checkered flag there was a wild scramble. Gulbrandson took the win with Schwebach and Schlueter right alongside Gulbrandson. The top three were separated by a scant .075 seconds. Doughty finished fourth and Caden Helle rounded out the top five.

Twenty-six USRA B-Mods took the green flag for their $1,000-to-win race. Caden Neisius took off from row one before a couple of cautions slowed the pace. On a lap seven restart, Neisius took off and continued to lead.

Taylor Skauge held second with a flurry of action going on behind him. Gage Motl moved to third and challenged Skauge. Harley Dais worked to fourth before the yellow returned on lap 14. At that time Neisius was docked for jumping the start.

That moved Skauge to the lead on the restart, but he tagged the wall in turn two and Neisius zoomed back to the lead. Neisius held on for his first win at Deer Creek. Dais slipped to second with Motl third.

Andrew Bleess led the USRA Stock Car feature while Kyle Falck and Brayden Gjere raced for second. Falck moved to second and they ran that way until a yellow came out on lap 11.

Gjere took the lead on lap 12, and after a lap 14 caution, led the rest of the way for his second straight win. Falck finished in second and Brandon Hare had a late race surge to third. Brady Williamson was fourth while Bleess was fifth.

Twenty-two USRA Modifieds took the green for the 25-lap, $2,000-to-win race. Parker Hale led until lap seven when Joe Chisholm slid to the lead in turn four. Hale tried to cross him back over, but the yellow came out soon after.

Jim Chisholm shot to second on the start, but another caution slowed the race on lap four. Yellow flags were predominant throughout. After a lap 11 restart, Joe Chisholm jumped the start, and was docked two spots at the next yellow.

Jim Chisholm and Brandon Davis put on a show back under green, but another yellow came out on lap 23. Joe Chisholm was then docked two spots again for jumping the restart. Jim Chisholm led the final two laps for the win while Joe Chisholm got back to second. Davis was third while Keith Foss and Hale rounded out the top five.
