Broking brings in $5,000 Late Model cash at Hibbing while LaBarge, Inman and Blevins set pace in their Saturday night features

HIBBING, MN (July 27) - Johnny Broking topped the headlining WISSOTA Late Model feature Saturday night at Hibbing Raceway, taking home the cool $5,000 check for his efforts.

Other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Tristan LaBarge, Andrew Inman, and Mikey Blevins.

In the $5,000-to-win KME WISSOTA Late Model Series special, Johnny Broking got the advantage into turn two at the start and immediately pulled away into the lead ahead of Danny Vang, with Derek Vesel and Jeff Provinzino close behind. Skeeter Estey was fifth.

The top five were strung out along the top side as the laps clicked off, with Vang closing in on Broking as Broking came upon a lapped car in his preferred groove. Broking dove low and back up into the top groove, pulling out to a slight advantage again as Vang was left to handle the lapped car himself.

Lapped traffic became more of an issue a couple of laps later, as most competitors were racing along the top side of the track. As he tried to navigate past George Ledin, Vang went off the track briefly and Vesel got by into second with 14 laps left on the board.

Broking had a bit of breathing room out front, as Vang and Vesel battled for second five laps later. A lap later, Kevin Burdick began to quickly reel in Vesel and drove by into third, using the low lane.

With the front of the field still negotiating heavy lapped traffic, Burdick continued to make the low lane work. He drove past Vang for second, but Broking had enough to hang on for the victory and big payday. Burdick’s charge finished in second, Vang was third, Provinzino was fourth and Vesel was fifth.

Jeff Wood was the leader early on in the WISSOTA Modified feature, as Tyler Kintner and John Toppozinio were side by side for second. A lap later, Kintner drove by Wood for the lead and immediately began to add to his advantage. Jeff Wood was second, with Jeffrey Wood and Toppozini side by side for third; Jeffrey took the spot.

With eight laps complete, Jeff and Jeffrey Wood began to debate second, with Jeffrey up high and Jeff down low. Jeff Davis made his way to fourth, and Toppozini was fifth. Andrew Inman battled with Bob Broking for sixth.

Kintner led the restart, as Jeffrey Wood and Jeff Davis fought for second, with Inman close behind in fourth in a battle with Bob Broking for the spot. Jeffrey Wood went on the attack to get past Kintner, as they were three wide for third among Davis, Inman and Broking. Jeffrey Wood moved to the inside of Kintner in turn four and made contact with Kintner; his No. 55 went around, collected Bob Broking and the yellow fell over the field again. The call was put on Wood and Broking was restored to his position.

Kintner led the restart, but had immediate pressure from Inman to his outside into turn four; Inman made the pass for the lead two turns later. Broking was third, with Toppozini fourth and Davis fifth.

With two laps to go, Kintner and Broking began to close back in, but Inman held on for the checkered flag. Broking used a turn-four slide job on Kintner for second, while Toppozini and Jeffrey Wood completed the top five.

Kevin Salin was the early leader in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, with Dalton Carlson and Dan Severson side by side for second before Severson lost the handle in turns one and two; the yellow brought the field back together with three laps scored.

It took just little more than a lap back under green for Tristan LaBarge to make his way into the lead. Andy LaBarge moved into second, Carlson was third, Kevin Salin in fourth and Danny Young cracking the top five.

No one had anything for Tristan, as he drove off to a healthy lead. Andy won the near race-long fight for second with Carlson, while Young moved into fourth around the halfway point. With five laps left, Kevin Salin and Robbie Lore got together and Lore was sent off the track for his second caution.

In the dash to the checkered flag, Tristan topped Andy and company by several car lengths, grabbing the victory. Carlson, Young and Mikey Vajdl rounded out the top five.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Garrett Paull was the early leader from the pole, as Mikey Blevins moved into second, Mervin Castle III was third, and Tim Jackson slipped back to fourth. A caution for last week’s winner, Andy Davey, brought the field back together.

Paull led the field back to green, with Castle and Blevins side by side for second. Sam Blevins was fourth, with Jackson now fifth. Another caution with just the second lap scored regrouped the field.

Back under green, Paull shot out back into the lead, as Mikey Blevins began to cut away at the advantage. Just as Mikey was about to make his move along the frontstretch, another caution fell for a dustup farther back in the field.

Following the restart with four laps scored, Mikey Blevins immediately went to the outside of Paull, drawing alongside for a lap and making the pass for the lead a lap later before another caution, this time for Matt Cunha, brought the field back together once again. Yet another caution waved, this time for a get-together between Davey and Cunha.

Mikey Blevins dashed out to the lead following the restart, with Castle and Paull side by side for second. Jackson was back up to fourth, while Michael Blevins, Sr. moved into the top five.

A couple laps later, Jackson got by Sam Blevins into third, as Castle left the track with troubles and another issue farther in the back of the pack brought out the yellow again. Another caution a lap later for a Dylan Miller and Sam Blevins dustup kept the field at its stop-and-go pace; Miller was tagged with the caution.

Mikey Blevins secured the lead from Paull once again with the field back under green, with Jackson moving in to pressure for the second spot. Michael Blevins, Sr. was also right there, grabbing third from Jackson during the white flag lap.

Out front son Mikey drove off to the victory, with Paull, Blevins, Sr., Jackson and Miller completing the top five.

In the WISSOTA Hornet feature, Brady Fosso was the early leader over the field, with Mikayla LaBarge close behind in second. A wreck in turn two brought the action to a halt with several laps in the books, in which Abbey Kraabel was injured. No condition update was given at press time, nor was there an update given on when the rest of the race will be made up.
