Schelitzche stings Hornets at Proctor while Hanson, Oreskovich, Lawrence, Simpson and Mindock top other WISSOTA classes

PROCTOR, MN (July 21) - Proctor Speedway hosted its annual Hornet Nationals Sunday night, under a full moon, and the Hornets did not disappoint as they raced two and three wide in the top five for much of the race.

Justin Schelitzche topped the WISSOTA Hornet headliner, while Harry Hanson, David Simpson, Brent Mindock, Nick Oreskovich, and Scott Lawrence took home victories in the other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action.

After a large, first-lap wreck in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Adam Shinn was the leader by a slight advantage, just ahead of David Simpson and Cody Carlson. Simpson got by the next lap to grab the top spot.

As the field remained under green and with Simpson comfortably out front, Carlson was second, just ahead of a fight for third between Shinn and Jimmy Latvala. A caution for a spun car off the backstretch brought the field back together.

Simpson was back out front following the green flag with nine scored, before a Mia Musel spin brought out the yellow flag once again.

The field was led back to green by Simpson, and they were three wide for second; Carlson shook out into the spot, as Ripley and Latvala were side by side for third before another yellow fell for a two-car get-together in turn four.

The green was back out with four to go, with Simpson once again leading the pack. Carlson held second, as ninth-starter Ryan Savoy moved to third after a great battle with Latvala for the spot. Don Smith was fifth.

Simpson drove on to the victory, as Carlson and Savoy completed the podium. Latvala and Ripley were top-five finishers.

Scott Lawrence (Tom Krob Photo)

Kevin Salin and Scott Lawrence brought the WISSOTA Super Stock field to the green flag, with Lawrence the early leader. They were stacked up behind Lawrence for top-five spots before a yellow for a Trenton Bond spin regrouped the field. The restart was short-lived, as a spin in turn four kept the field at a stop-and-go pace.

Lawrence led the field back to the green with just two laps complete, as D.J. Keeler took second from Pat Beeksma. Kyle Copp won the fight for fourth, as Shawn McFadden and Curt Myers battled for fifth. Myers got by McFadden, and then passed both Copp and Beeksma along the top side for third just a lap later.

At the halfway point, Lawrence had about a half second lead, as Myers closed in on Keeler for second. Lawrence came under pressure from Keeler with three to go, as Myers worked the high side and moved into the battle. With two laps to go, Myers shot to the inside of Keeler for second, gaining the spot on the final lap, and nipping Keeler at the line. Out front Lawrence escaped with the victory, ahead of Myers, Keeler, Copp and Beeksma.

Nick Oreskovich (Tom Krob Photo)

Jack Rivord and Brandon Copp were the front-row leaders for the start of the WISSOTA Modified feature. Copp spun in turn one at the drop of the green, collecting Kevin Adams and John Toppozini; Copp was sent to the back.

Back under green, Rivord led Jody Bellefeuille, Adams, Kennedy Swan and Andrew Inman in the top five.

Rivord and Bellefeuille continued their side-by-side battle for the lead, as Swan got past Adams for third. Bellefeuille moved into the lead a lap later and Nick Oreskovich worked into fifth. A spin for Jeffrey Wood brought the field back together.

Bellefeuille jumped back out to a nice lead ahead of the battle for second between Swan and Rivord. Swan got second and began to make a run at Bellefeuille, as Adams displaced Rivord for third. Oreskovich then pressured Rivord for fourth and got by a lap later. With seven to go, Jeffrey Wood spun again and the field was reset.

Back under green, Bellefeuille had pressure from first Swan and then Adams; Bellefeuille regained the lead, with Swan and Adams side by side for second. Contact was made and Adams went around, but the call went against Adams.

Following the restart, Oreskovich moved past Bellefeuille and Swan into the lead, as Bellefeuille and Swan fought for second; Swan got by into the spot. Bellefeuille then came under fire from Copp, who drove into third, and Adams was back into the top five getting by Bellefeuille shortly after.

With Oreskovich out front with a healthy lead to the checkered, Swan hung on for second at the stripe, just ahead of Copp and Adams. Bellefeuille completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Hornet headliner, Nikota Larson was the early leader before a spin with no laps complete brought the field back together for a full restart.

Back under green, they were three wide for the lead, with Riley Ament shaking out into the top spot. Larson was second, while Mikayla LaBarge and Justin Schelitzche fought for third.

The following lap, LaBarge moved to second, Schelitzche was third and Larson had slipped back to fourth before a spin regrouped the field under yellow.

Ament led the field back to the green, while Schelitzche, LaBarge and Carson Gotelaere fought for second, three wide. Just behind, DeJay Jarecki entered the top five from his 15th starting spot.

Out front Ament continued to lead, with heavy pressure from LaBarge and Gotelaere. Schelitzche and Jarecki were close behind for fourth and fifth.

The top five runners were two and three wide for positions behind Ament for several laps; using the top side of the track, Gotelaere and Schelitzche drove by Ament into first and second before LaBarge had mechanical issues along the backstretch and the yellow regrouped the field.

Gotelaere was the leader for the restart, with Schelitzche and Brett Leino in the top three. Jarecki pressured Leino for third and got the spot.

Out front, Schelitzche got by Gotelaere for the top spot, as smoke began to make an appearance behind the machine of Gotelaere. Jarecki was third. Gotelaere came to a stop in turn four with mechanical troubles with the white flag in the air, so the field regrouped for a dash to the finish; another caution during the attempt at a restart kept the field slowed.

Schelitzche led the field back to green with one lap to go, and held on to win the 2024 Hornet Nationals. Jarecki completed his charge through the field in second, Payton Swenson was third, Larson was fourth and Leino completed the top five.

Harry Hanson (Tom Krob Photo)

In the WISSOTA Late Models, Harry Hanson and Mike Klippenstein battled back and forth for the lead, with Hanson gaining the advantage. Tim McMann was third, while Danny Vang and Dave Flynn fought for fourth.

Hanson had a several car-length lead over Klippenstein, as Dave Flynn had made his way to fourth and began to close in on McMann for third.

Hanson began to work his way through the backmarkers with six to go, while Flynn got by McMann for third.

Hanson drove on undeterred, grabbing his second straight win at Proctor. He was followed to the checkered flag by Klippenstein, Flynn, McMann and Vang in the top five.

Brent Mindock (Tom Krob Photo)

Aaron Bernick was the early leader of the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature, with Brent Mindock and Chaston Finckbone getting by into first and second a few laps later. Mindock and Finckbone fought side by side for the lead, before Mindock began to pull away at the halfway point. Bernick moved back in to challenge Finckbone for second, just behind Mindock. Finckbone grabbed second, and looked for a way by Mindock, but came up just short at the checkered flag as Mindock garnered the win. Finckbone was second, Bernick was third, Tom Treviranus was fourth and Jake Smith finished fifth.
