Sabraski scores in Late Models and Koch claims Super Stock feature on first night of Gondik Law’s Border Battle

SUPERIOR, WI (June 28) - Night one of the Great Lakes Border Battle got underway at Gondik Law Speedway on Saturday night, having been postponed from Friday due to racing’s familiar dancing partner this season - rain.

When the final checkered flag flew Saturday in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action, Shane Sabraski took the win in the WISSOTA Late Models, Dexton Koch scored the victory in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, and Joey Jensen topped the WISSOTA Midwest Mods. The Modifieds also ran their dual heat races to qualify for Sunday night’s grand finale.

Travis Budisalovich and Pat Doar brought the field of Late Models to the green flag, with Doar the early leader and Budisalovich right on his bumper. Sabraski, who started fourth, moved to third in the early stages.

For several laps, Budisalovich and Doar were side by side for the top spot, before the front-runners began to dice through lapped traffic with about 12 laps scored. The first caution of the race regrouped the field and gave an open track to the leaders.

Doar led the restart, as Sabraski swung by Budisalovich on the outside line into second and set out after Doar for two laps, before another caution fell. The restart was marred by a several-car pile up.

It took just one lap for Sabraski to blow by Doar on the outside and into the lead following the restart. From there, the No. 7A held command over the field and took home his first-ever Late Model win at Gondik Law. Doar was second, Budisalovich was third, 15th-starter Johnny Broking charged to fourth, and Dan Bargender improved six spots to fifth.

Corey Mehrwerth and David Simpson brought the field to the green flag in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, with Mehrwerth the early leader. Jake Smith finessed his way into the top spot from his fifth starting position just five laps in. Simpson was third, Joey Jensen was fourth and Ryan Gierke was fifth.

Jensen had a full head of steam along the bottom and got by both Mehrwerth and Simpson to grab second four laps later.

Smith continued to lead at the halfway point, but Jensen was chipping away at the lead. As Smith negotiated lapped traffic, Jensen closed in on his bumper; lapped traffic caused Smith to change his line and Jensen capitalized, making the pass for the lead and the win with just six laps remaining.

Smith closed back in at the finish and they were side by side in turn four with the checkered flag in the air, but Smith did not have enough to get by and settled for second. Simpson was third, Gierke was fourth, and Jason VandeKamp completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Dexton Koch started outside the front row, narrowly led lap one, but took off from there.

With about 10 to go, Sabraski, who started fifth, caught Koch and drove to the inside of the No. 78K. They were side by side as they came to put a lap on Rita Anderson, with Koch pulling back out into the lead.

With five laps remaining, Koch built his lead back up to more than a second and drove on to garner the victory, with Sabraski finishing second. Tristan LaBarge was third. Kyle Copp and 10th-starter D.J. Keeler were top-five finishers.

In the USRA Late Models, Cade Nelson started from the front row and drove on to the eventual victory.
