As winged warriors take center stage Friday at Brown County, young guns Gross and Schmidt speed to Mod and MidMod wins

By Spencer Heupel

ABERDEEN, SD (June 28) - It was Open Wheel Mania night at Brown County Speedway on Friday. WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and Modifieds, as well as the NOSA/MSTS 410 Sprint cars were all on hand. In total there were 54 drivers in attendance, and after a prolonged intermission due to a quick rain shower, the features were fast and entertaining.

Taylor Schmidt, Garrett Gross and Tim Estenson were the lucky drivers who found their ways into Buffalo Wild Wings victory lane.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had 18 drivers on hand. Schmidt and Scott Bintz brought the field to the green flag, with Bintz grabbing the lead early. The track was super racey with great battles throughout the field.

Bintz set a blistering pace with Schmidt hot on his tail. The lead duo ended up in lapped traffic with only nine to go. Bintz made quick work early, but after the first four cars, the traffic was heavier and this allowed Schmidt the opportunity to take the lead.

As Schmidt began to find his way around Bintz and lapped traffic, Cole Neset and Arin Beyer closed in on the leaders. With the top four under a blanket, Schmidt eventually got a run out of turn two and grabbed an advantage with only five to go.

It was not over yet, however, as Bintz tried to get around the No. 15 machine. As Schmidt took the white flag, Neset spun in turn one and the field fell under caution, setting up a green, white, checkered finish. When the field took the green again, Bintz rocked the top side trying to build up the momentum to get past Schmidt. But as they went into turn one on the final lap, Bintz found a rut and this allowed Beyer past and Schmidt to pull away with ease. Schmidt went on to score his third win of the season at BCS and the extra $500 bonus.

The 12-car WISSOTA Modified field came on track for their $1,000 payday. The front row was scheduled to be Tony Konold and Garrett Gross, but Konold had engine troubles and did not start the feature. Dylan Zabel inherited the outside front-row starting spot for the drop of the green.

Under green, Gross blasted out to an early lead, but his lead was cut short due to a caution on lap two for Kent Arment, who bicycled in turn one, and ended up going over the corner. As the field retook the green flag, Derek Hanson powered by Zabel to take second and set his sights on Gross.

Caution struck again, however, as James Hanley spun off of turn one. During the restart, Zabel retook second and Chaun Peterson followed to take third. The field began to fan out as the track was one lane around the middle.

Gross and Zabel broke away from Peterson, and began to catch lapped traffic with just five to go. Zabel kept edging closer and closer, but slipped up just a bit, which allowed Peterson to close to no avail. Gross led all 20 laps to score his first win in 2024 and picked up his biggest payday of $1,000.

The night cap was the combined event of NOSA and MSTS 410 Sprint cars, with 25 drivers on hand for the $2,500 payday. Weston Olsen and Justin Jacobsma brought the field to green. The race was fast paced, with Tim Estenson grabbing the lead on lap three due to a tandem rollover; both drivers were okay. Estenson never looked back, scoring his first-ever win at BCS. Estenson even turned the fastest lap ever at BCS with a 10.566 lap time.
