Sabraski sprints to big Late Model win worth $11,111 at Hibbing’s Tommy Waseleski Memorial on Saturday

HIBBING, MN (July 12) - Shane Sabraski collected another huge victory during his July jaunt across WISSOTA Country, this time in the Late Models, as he drove to the inaugural Tommy Waseleski Memorial victory at Hibbing Raceway Friday night. The event was held in honor of longtime Iron Range racer Waseleski, who turned laps and made an impact in dirt track racing for 33 years before retiring in 2013. He passed away in September of 2023.

Sabraski’s win, worth $11,000, was the largest so far for the Late Model rookie and multitime WISSOTA National Champion. Other winners in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action Friday night included Deven VanHouse and Trenton Beel.

In the WISSOTA Late Models, Sabraski started on the pole and took the lead from Skeeter Estey - Thursday night’s Prelude winner at Grand Rapids Speedway - immediately pulling away. A caution for a couple of spun cars with three laps in regrouped the field.

Sabraski took off back out front under green, quickly building an advantage. He began to encounter lapped traffic with 13 laps scored, and they battled two and three wide ahead of him. Billy Kendall quickly closed in to his deck lid, with Estey close behind in third. Jeff Massingill was fourth, as the yellow flag came out for a stalled Jeff Provinzino ride in turn four. Another caution occurred on the restart.

Back under green, Sabraski moved back out to the advantage, as Kendall held second, Massingill got by Estey for third, and Tyler Peterson, who started ninth, displaced Estey another spot for fourth. A couple laps later, Darrell Nelson, who started 13th, was making his way to the front along the low line of the track.

With 11 laps to go, Sabraski’s advantage was a healthy one - more than two seconds - but lapped traffic was again ahead. Nelson made his way into the top five two laps later. The caution appeared again with eight laps to go.

Sabraski led the restart, with Peterson driving into second a lap later, before Jeff Massingill went around in turn four and the caution fell once again.

With seven laps to go, Sabraski pulled out into the lead for the restart, as Peterson held second and Nelson slid into third ahead of Estey and Kendall.

Sabraski had company for the restart, with Peterson to his inside and Nelson to his outside. With one lap to go, Nelson shot down to the inside into second in turn one, but Sabraski held on out front and drove to what was the biggest payday of his Late Model career to date. Nelson, Peterson, Kendall and Massingill were top-five finishers.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Deven VanHouse took the lead from race-long leader Andy Davey on lap 12, and drove on to the victory, with Davey settling for second. Sam Blevins, David Simpson and Mervin Castle III were top-five finishers.

Trenton Beel topped the WISSOTA Hornet feature. Beel started inside the second row, and took the lead during lap three. He toured the next 12 laps out front and drove his No. 30 to victory lane. Joseph Puidokas, ninth-starter Addison LaBarge, Derek Ament and 10th-starter McKenna Folstad in the top five.
