Anderson leads Casino Speedway’s winner list on Sunday with WISSOTA Late Model victory

By Tony Steuck

WATERTOWN, SD (July 14) - Casino Speedway returned to action on Sunday, and Trevor Anderson returned to victory lane at the oval for the first time since 2021 – it was also his first win in the Late Model division at his home track. Mike Stearns, Derek Rieck, Maria Broksieck and Adam VanDerostyne picked up repeat wins in their respective WISSOTA Dirt Track Series divisions.

David Carlson grabbed the initial lead when the green flag dropped on the 20-lap WISSOTA Late Model main event. He set the pace until he jumped the rugged cushion in turn four, and Anderson narrowly beat him to the flagstand to complete lap three. After the lap was scored, the only caution waved for a spin.

Anderson led the field to the restart, and Curt Kranz displaced Carlson for second. Kranz challenged for the lead over a few laps, but then had to fend off Chad Becker for his position. Anderson approached a pair of lapped machines battling door to door, and a miscue on the cushion allowed Kranz and Becker to close in. Anderson zigged, and then zagged between the pair of lapped machines, and opened a slim lead while his competitors worked through traffic. Kranz and Becker closed again in the final few laps, but Anderson stayed steady and took his first checkered flag at Casino Speedway since a Modified win in July 2021. Kranz was second ahead of Becker, Ryan Engels and Jayson Good.

Jayden Michaelsohn held a slim lead in the early laps of the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Tyler Lamb and Chris Serr followed closely in the low groove – Lamb got into the left rear of Michaelsohn on lap five, which allowed Jason Marko to scoot to third on the cushion, but he slipped back to fifth by halfway.

Michaelsohn opened a substantial lead, and Serr challenged Lamb for second before the first yellow flag with 14 laps recorded.

Maria Broksieck restarted fifth, but charged around the cushion after the restart with six laps to go. She moved by Serr for second with three laps left, then had to alter her line to attempt to pass for the lead; she cut under the leader out of turn two with less than two laps left, and the lead pair made contact as they raced under the white flag. Broksieck secured the top spot down the back chute on the final lap, and grabbed her fourth win of the year ahead of Michaelsohn, Serr, Lamb and Marko in the top five.

Derek Rieck (Cody Papke Photo)

Derek Rieck led all the way in the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, but had to fend off a pair of challengers in the caution-free race. Rieck held a comfortable lead early, but a few consecutive corners with a miscue on the cushion allowed Scott Hansen and Mike Nichols to close in. Hansen threw a slide job on lap seven, but Rieck countered and remained at the point. Nichols took advantage when Hansen jumped the cushion to claim second on lap nine. Nichols worked the low side in a challenge for the lead, and a slower car on lap 14 made both leaders adjust their lines. Rieck switched to the bottom groove for a few circuits, but returned to the cushion and held off Nichols in the closing laps for his second win of the season. Hansen was over a straightaway back in third with Terry Reilly fourth and Chad Williamson fifth.

Mike Stearns (Cody Papke Photo)

Scott Ward grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap WISSOTA Modified feature with Mike Stearns second and Tim Thomas third. After a restart with three laps complete, Stearns swooped into the lead in turns one and two; Ward kept him in his sights for a few laps until he slowed and brought out a caution with six laps scored; he returned to the tail of the field.

Stearns slipped away, and Dale Ames moved to second after the restart. Thomas led a pack of five cars for third. Tony Konold and Cayden Schmeling took turns challenging, but Schmeling was turned around and the caution appeared with 11 laps in. One more caution fell with five laps to go, but Stearns was unchallenged to the checkered flag for his second win of the season. Ames finished second with Thomas third, Konold fourth and Trevor Walsh fifth.

Adam VanDerostyne (Cody Papke Photo)

VanDerostyne made a four-wide move into turn one on the opening lap, snagged the lead, and raced off to more than a straightaway advantage before the checkers fell on the WISSOTA Hornet main event. Chase Pourrier climbed to second in the opening laps, but lost power and dropped from the race. Bradley Rossow and Joshua Gebhart were engaged in a dogfight for most of the race, and Rossow claimed the spot at the finish; Gebhart was the final finisher. The victory was VanDerostyne’s fourth of the season at the oval.
