Skorczewski and Schmeling score in Lates and Mods at Aberdeen while Abeln takes more than 3K for Super Stock win

By Spencer Heupel

ABERDEEN, SD (July 12) - The weather was hot and so was the racing action at Brown County Speedway for the inaugural Andy Daly Memorial. There were 94 drivers in attendance, all looking to score wins in their respective classes. The WISSOTA Super Stocks were the headliner with a $3,012 payday on the line, plus many incentives for other drivers in the other classes.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Josh Skorczewski, Cayden Schmeling, Jayden Bogh, Jaren Wibstad and Mark Abeln.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had 19 drivers on hand for a stout field. Jordan Kienow and Kagan Cutler were on the front row, with Kienow taking advantage and grabbing the early lead. The field used every part of the race track, which in turn made for some good racing.

The first yellow struck on lap three with Dawson Zabel spinning off the frontstretch. On the restart, Jaren Wibstad moved from fourth to second and began to battle Kienow. Wibstad used the top side to take the lead on lap six. As he pulled away, the battle for second was a heavy contest between Kienow, Eric Cease and Nathan Jager.

Wibstad checked out on the field, while in the final laps Jake Wranek worked his way through the battle for second to take the spot. Wibstad scored his first win at BCS in 2024, followed by Wranek, Cease, 19th-starter and hard charger Taylor Schmidt, and ninth-starter Jarod Klein.

In the 15-car WISSOTA Street Stock feature, Corey Moser and Chris Serr led the field to green. Serr grabbed the lead early, but was immediately challenged by Jayden Bogh, who started third.

The two drivers battled hard and cleanly until Bogh sent a slide job into turn three and cleared Serr to take the lead with eight to go. Bogh immediately opened up an advantage over Serr and the rest of the field, while Andy Rossow and Kyle Bertram both moved into the top five.

Bogh caught lapped traffic with two laps to go, but drove straight and clean with ease to score his second win at BCS this year. Serr, Moser, Andy Rossow and Bertram completed the top five.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were up next with 15 drivers in the pit area. Kent Arment and Jesse Young brought the field to the green with Young grabbing the early lead.

Young was under fire quickly from Cayden Schmeling, who battled to the inside of the No. 32 machine. The pair battled hard, putting on a show for a grandstand full of fans. Schmeling sent a slide job on lap five, and Young tried to cross over, but Schmeling was too strong and took the lead. Caution struck on lap 12 with Garret Gross spinning in turn four.

Following the restart, Arment passed Young and battled Schmeling for the lead, but Schmeling fended off Arment and put distance on the field. The yellow flag flew again with only four to go from Gross spinning in turn three.

On what was the final restart, Dylan Zabel took second from Arment while Schmeling ran away from the field. Schmeling scored his second win at BCS this year, while Zabel was the hard charger, going plus-six for the second-place finish. Mike Stearns, Arment, and 11th-starter Tyler Anglin completed the top five.

Following up was the WISSOTA Late Models with 22 drivers on hand. It became a caution- and red-flag-filled affair. Mike Jager and Rusty Kollman led the field to green, with Kollman the early leader. With the fast pace Kollman was running, he caught lapped traffic on lap four, but the caution flew on lap six with Roger Bitz spinning in turn four.

The restart was the same as Kollman settled into the top spot, but this time Josh Skorczewski kept pace with the leader. The lead duo were in lapped traffic with 16 to go; Skorczewski made his way through the backmarkers and took the lead. Nick Schmidt and Russ Beadle got together in turn one and the caution brought the field back together.

Following the next restart attempt, Chase Gelling used the top to clear Kollman and moved into second. Caution struck again for Konnor Sperle spinning off of turn one. They reracked the field and Kollman moved back into second place. Skorczewski began to pull away and the field finally ticked off a few laps until yellow struck once more when Robert Bitz and Schmidt tangled in turn one, which turned into a red flag as officials separated the cars.

When the field regrouped for the green with 12 to go, Denver Nickeson made a move to pass Gelling for third. Nickeson, who started 14th, got to the outside of Kollman for second until something broke underneath his machine and ended his race.

Skorczewski had a big lead as he hit lapped traffic with seven to go. The field was racing hard until Todd Thomas flew off the top of turn one.

With the restart coming with only three laps to go, Skorczewski took advantage of Kent Arment battling Kollman and checked out on the field. The win for Skorczewski is the first at his home track this season.

“Hopefully we can do this again next weekend for some big money and with my new baby,” Skorczewski said. Skorczewksi’s wife, Erica, was due the following week.

Kollman, Arment, 10th-starter Stearns, and 16th-starter Dustin Arthur were top-five finishers.

Mark Abeln (Cody Papke Photo)

The final feature of the night was the Andy Daly WISSOTA Super Stock Memorial race. There was a total of 23 drivers eyeing the chance at a $3,012 payday. Kaden Kampa and Brad Kopecky led the field from the front row. On the start, Derek Zastrow spun going into turn one, collecting six to seven other drivers. Thankfully all drivers were able to continue and Zastrow went to the tail for the restart.

Kopecky grabbed the lead after the complete restart, and began to pull away from the field. Kopecky’s pace took him into lapped traffic on lap five, and around lap eight the traffic was super heavy. With the heavy traffic and no room to maneuver, Kopecky was a sitting duck as Mark Abeln began to reel him in. The race became intense as Abeln closed in with each lap.

With eight to go, Abeln pulled alongside Kopecky and the race for the lead was on. The leaders were battling hard and clean; meanwhile, Nathan Grehl reeled them in and a blanket could have been thrown over the top three. Abeln finally made his move for the lead with four to go and Grehl followed him.

The new lead duo began to battle, and Grehl was giving anything a try to pass Abeln. On the final lap Grehl tried the middle of three and four, but Abeln powered around on the outside to score the win and the big payday. It was a very emotional victory and moment for Abeln, who was very close to Andy Daly and his family. Abeln invited the whole Daly family in attendance down to victory lane for a photo. Kopecky, Trevor Nelson and ninth-starter William Lund were top-five finishers.
