King Of Dirt weekend at I-94 wraps up Saturday as wins go to Peterson, Bitzan, Nelson, Reinke, Riley and Pourrier

By Ron Krog

FERGUS FALLS, MN (June 1) - The Dick Johanneck King of Dirt weekend wrapped up Saturday night with a nice field of 157 cars in seven classes running for the crown.

Race fans also got a special treat, as for the second night in a row the Dirt Race Central WISSOTA Street Stock tour was also in town, along with the NLRA WISSOTA Late Models.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners - and Kings of Dirt - included Tyler Peterson, Dustin Bitzan, Trevor Nelson, Nate Reinke, Eric Riley and Chase Pourrier. John Winge took the crown in the Gen X Late Models.

A nice field of 26 WISSOTA Midwest Mods put on quite a show, as Ron Saurer, in his 50th year of racing, took the lead in the 25-lap feature ahead of Corey Storck and Matt Schow going at it for second.

After a caution with six laps scored, Storck took charge followed by Saurer, with Nate Reinke moving past Corey Mehrwerth into third.

With 14 laps left Reinke got by Saurer for second, and four laps later Schow passed Saurer for third.

The last six laps were very intense as Storck and Reinke went back and forth before Storck broke a shock with two to go, and Reinke was able to get by and grab a hard fought win. Storck, Schow, Mehrwerth and Saurer completed the top five.

The Dirt Race Central Street Stock Tour also brought 31 very good race cars to Fergus Falls for the night. In his first visit here, Wade Tirrel was very impressive as he took the early lead in the 25-lap feature. Eric Riley was quickly on the move from his third starting spot and moved out front, with Kyle Dykhoff following through to second.

Back in traffic Justin Vogel fought his way from 15th to fifth with 14 laps to go. Ty Agen moved up to third, and he and Dykhoff tried to run down the lightning-fast Riley with Andrew Hanson close behind. In the end Riley took home the win with Dykhoff edging Agen for second. Hanson and Kyle Anderson rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks had a wild feature, with Jordan Henkemeyer in the early lead with heavy pressure from Dexton Koch and Trevor Saurer.

Trevor Nelson (Nick Anderson Photo)

With eight laps scored Koch got by Henkemeyer for the lead. Then a lap later Dave Mass went up to the top and found a lot of speed; he jumped from fifth to second and grabbed the lead before he broke on the final lap. Seemingly out of nowhere, Trevor Nelson threw a slider on Koch and edged him to the finish line for the win. Koch, Dan Nissalke, Henkemeyer, and William Lund completed the top five.

Tyler Peterson (Nick Anderson Photo)

The largest field of the night was a strong 33-car field of NLRA WISSOTA Late Models. Brad Seng ran strongly early, as he held off Don Shaw and Dave Mass.

A yellow reset the field and Mass took charge, but with 20 laps left Mass lost a wheel and Shaw took over out front. Fifth-starter Tyler Peterson was on a mission as he got by Shaw for the lead and Dustin Strand followed through to second. In the end Peterson grabbed the crown followed by Strand, Shaw, Shane Edginton, and 17th-starter Cole Schill in the top five.

Dustin Bitzan (Nick Anderson Photo)

Nineteen WISSOTA Modifieds took the green flag for their feature, led early by Dusty Bitzan with Tyler Peterson close behind.

Ryan Gierke was on the move forward from fifth, getting by Lucas Rodin for third with six laps left.

In the meantime, Peterson caught Bitzan and they were swapping spots, but with five laps left something broke on Peterson's car and he hit the wall and rolled in turn four, with the car also catching fire. It was quickly put out.

Bitzan held on to edge Gierke for the win with Jason Thoennes running very strong in third. Joe Thomas and Jeremy Nelson rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Hornet class is full of new faces this year and it looks like a lot of great talent. The teenagers are making a name for themselves and one of them is Chase Pourrier. He already has three wins in his first full season in the class and he took home the crown Saturday, with Jeff Rohner, Kole Kampson, Christian Kast and Andrew DeNoble completing the top five.

John Winge made the drive up from Harrisburg, SD to win the Cliff Viessman Gen X Late Model feature over a good 17-car field.

I-94 Speedway thanks Realty Experts of Bemidji, Dirt Race Central, and Thrivent for sponsoring the races along with all the treats for Kids Night.

There is no racing at I-94 on June 7, but we will be back June 14 with the Rebel Midwest Mod Tour.
