Dykhoffs deliver a pair of King Of Dirt wins to family fans Friday at I-94 Speedway
By Ron Krog
FERGUS FALLS, MN (May 31) - Friday night kicked off the 15th annual Dick Johanneck King of Dirt doubleheader weekend, and it got off to an amazing start. One week ago at Viking Speedway, Haley Dykhoff blasted through a strong field of WISSOTA Midwest Mods to get a very convincing victory. One week later at I-94 May 31, not only did Haley make it to victory lane once again, but her husband Kyle did the same in the WISSOTA Street Stocks. This very rare occurrence highlighted WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action at the Fergus Falls oval.
The 33-car WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature was led early by Taylor Bitzan, with Haley Dykhoff close in second. The first five laps rolled off incident free, but then a caution reset the field. Corey Mehrwerth moved into third following the restart, as Dykhoff took the lead. With 12 laps left, Bitzan regained the top spot, looking strong out front. Behind him it was a mad scramble as Matt Schow, Ron Saurer, Corey Storck and Mike Nichols were all charging forward and closing in on Dykhoff in second.
With five laps to go, Bitzan’s car broke and the yellow flew. Dykhoff drove off with the lead following the green flag and netted the eventual win, with Schow second, Storck third from 11th, 20th-starter Saurer fourth, 14th-starter Nichols in fifth.
The WISSOTA Street Stock feature was set for 25 laps with 26 lightning-fast cars ready to roll, led early by Jeff Ekdahl. Justin Vogel was close behind in second, but soon Kyle Dykhoff got by and grabbed the lead from Ekdahl, as Eric Riley and Vogel battled for second.
Late in the race Vogel took a couple of runs at Dykhoff, but then broke with five laps left.
Things got wild in the closing laps, as Riley threw a slider at Dykhoff, who crossed him over and retook the lead. Riley came back with three laps left and stole the top spot once again, as Dykhoff somehow got it back to hang on for a tight win. Riley was second and Ty Agen came from 15th to complete the podium. Andrew Hanson and Cory Dykhoff were top-five finishers.
A nice field of 14 WISSOTA Super Stocks also rolled onto the track, featuring many regional heavy hitters. Trevor Nelson was smooth as silk as he took the lead and that’s not usually good for the rest of the field. Dan Nissalke worked his way to second with seven laps scored, and behind him Dexton Koch was wreaking havoc as he battled with Ryan Satter and William Lund.
Four laps later Koch, who was running third, drove by Nissalke for second and tried to run down Nelson. It got interesting late in the race as lapped traffic held up Nelson, but he held on for a nice win ahead of Koch, Lund, Nissalke and Satter in the top five.
A healthy field of 17 WISSOTA Modifieds were led early on by front-row starter Justin Froemming. Polesitter Jason Thoennes was in hot pursuit until the final two laps, when Joe Thomas snuck by for second. Thoennes completed the podium, with Ryan Gierke fourth and Jeremy Nelson close in fifth.
The WISSOTA Hornets had a nice field of 18 cars on hand, and as usual Matt Dittman and Jeff Rohner were the class of the field. They finished first and second, while Chase Pourrier did a nice job to finish third. Kole Kampsen and Bobie Arnes had impressive runs to complete the top five.
There were 19 Cliff Viessman Gen X Late Models on hand, with Tony Croninger grabbing the victory. Rick Schroeder was solid in second and Brad Staples ran third. A very fast Bodie Croninger finished in fourth, and Ben Wolden was fifth.
The speedway thanks All Star Construction,Winning Edge Graphics and Lakeside Lumber for sponsoring the night.
