Young, Toppozini, Simpson and Bolt tighten the screws on Thunder City competition Wednesday night
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (May 29) - Danny Young, John Toppozini, David Simpson, and Kyle Bolt were WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners Wednesday night, as Thunder City Speedway hosted a weekly show on May 29 for 120 racers, as the Thunder Bay oval continues to welcome huge car counts to its pits.
In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, David Mitchell was the early leader from the pole before a dustup in the back occurred without a lap complete. Side-by-side action was plentiful throughout the field for the first several laps, as Mitchell continued to lead, although A.J. Kellar moved in to pressure for the lead, with Kyle Bolt and Darren Wolframe in the mix for top four spots.
One lap later, they were three wide for second behind Mitchell, with Bolt grabbing second and immediately moving in to pressure Mitchell for the lead. Wolframe was third, and Kellar was fourth. Wolframe moved by Bolt into second as they raced through lapped traffic before a caution reset the field with four laps to go.
Following the restart, Bolt, Wolframe, and Brendan Makkinga got around Mitchell coming to the line with three to go. Bolt hung on and took the victory ahead of Wolframe, Makkinga, Kellar and Mitchell in the top five.
The WISSOTA Midwest Mods were led to green by Kevin Monteith and Dan Tocheri, with Tanner Ulakovic and David Simpson in row two. A first lap caution negated the start.
On the ensuing restart, Monteith had a slim lead to complete the lap, but Simpson took over the top spot in corner one before another caution brought the field to a halt and restored Monteith to the lead.
Following the green, Monteith continued to lead with heavy pressure from Simpson. Simpson dove down low between turns one and two and took command, followed closely by Monteith. Tocheri was third, Ulakovic was fourth, and Matthew Mitchell moved into the top five.
Out front Simpson began to put distance on the field by the halfway point. A caution for Trenton Woodbeck brought the field back to Simpson’s deck lid. Another caution about a lap later kept the field at a stop-and-go pace.
Simpson drove on to the eventual victory, taking the checkered flag ahead of Monteith, Tocheri, Ulakovic and Kolby Reed in the top five.
Danny Young was the early leader in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature from the pole. Frequent cautions and delayed restart lineups marred the start of the race, and the race was green, white, checkered. When the field was finally back underway, Young drove off to the win ahead of Rick Simpson, Shawn Polonoski, John Toppozini, and Andrew Groom in the top five.
In the WISSOTA Modifieds, John Toppozini started outside of the second row and took the lead the second lap, holding on for 15 circuits and taking the victory ahead of Cole Chernosky, Jeff Davis, Joel Cryderman, and Riley Matthews in the top five.
In the track’s Hornet class, Nate Owen won from seventh in the field.
