WATERTOWN, SD (June 23) -Tony Konold scored a pair of feature wins at Casino Speedway on Sunday, and his sister Maria picked one up as well for good measure. Lucas Rodin grabbed the win in the Rebel Midwest Mod Tour feature, Chad Becker and Jayson Good split Late Model wins, and Dylan Tirrel was victorious in the Hornets during WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action.

Scott Bintz grabbed the lead when the 20-lap WISSOTA Rebel Midwest Modified Tour took the green flag. He circled the low groove, while fellow front-row starter Mike Nichols made the high groove work after a few laps, but contact with the turn-one wall allowed Terry Reilly and Rodin to challenge. Rodin and Nichols shed Reilly, and raced door to door as they reeled in the leader.

With eight laps scored, the top three ran in close contention. Rodin and Nichols did not relent in their pressure, and Rodin started to stick his machine in the middle of his two opponents in the first set of turns; he cleared Nichols on lap 16, and used the middle groove to race around Bintz for the lead on lap 17. Rodin raced to the checkers in the caution-free event, with Bintz second, Nichols third, and eighth-starter Scott Hansen fourth. Derek Rieck started 10th, and made late-moves to grab fifth.

Maris Broksieck (Cody Papke Photo)

Tony Miller led early in the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock main event with pressure from Andy Rossow. Cory Giessinger fought off Jason Marko and Maria Broksieck to remain third. After a caution with five laps scored, Rossow moved to the middle groove and powered around the outside of Miller for the lead on lap six. Broksieck followed to second before a tangle in the top five sent Chris Serr to the tail of the field.

Rossow maintained the lead, and Broksieck was close in second before a miscue on lap 14 dropped her from the top five. Zach Flickinger moved to second with Braden Brauer third; Brauer found another gear late and moved under Flickinger for second with two laps to go. He was nearly even with Rossow under the white flag, and sent his machine deep into turn three on the final circuit. Brauer briefly held the lead as he drifted across turn four, with Rossow racing through the middle and Broksieck — somehow back in the mix — hugging the low groove as the trio exited three wide out of the final turn. Broksieck moved up as she approached the flagstand, and first Brauer ran out of room, and then Rossow and Broksieck crossed under the checkers for her third win of the season at the speedway. Rossow was second in the wild finish, and Brauer settled for third. Flickinger and Marko rounded out the top five.

Jayson Good (Cody Papke Photo)

Curt Kranz out-gunned Morgan Ward-Grosz to lead the opening lap of the WISSOTA Late Model main event. The first caution waved when Ward-Grosz spun in turn two with a pair of laps scored.

Jayson Good worked the middle groove after the restart, and pulled to the outside of Kranz; he made the pass for the lead on lap four, and brought Tyler Peterson with him. Kranz and Peterson battled for second behind the leader for a few laps, but the top three separated, and Kranz lost a spot to Chad Becker. Good maintained a moderate advantage over Peterson before a caution with 16 of 25 laps scored.

Peterson stuck his car to the inside, and saw an opening to squeeze under Good. Peterson nosed ahead to lead lap 19, but Good charged to his inside, and regained the lead on the following lap. The two continued to race tightly for the top spot, but made contact in turn two, which caused Good to spin and bring out a yellow. Peterson was sent to the tail.

Good regained the top spot for the restart with three laps left. He raced unchallenged to the checkered flag for his first win at Casino Speedway on the season, and Scott Ward slipped by Becker for second after the restart. Josh Skorczewski and 13th-starter Lee Grosz rounded out the top five.

Chad Becker (Cody Papke Photo)

Becker moved to the lead on the opening lap of the makeup Late Model feature from May 26. He pulled away from the pack while Kranz maintained second over Ward. Kranz was caught up behind a slower machine with nine laps to go, which allowed Ward to briefly gain second, but Ward relented the spot on the next lap. Kranz cleared the slower machine with six to go, but almost as soon as he did, he lost power and spun to the infield to bring out a caution.

Becker raced away after the final restart and scored his second win of the season at the oval. Ward finished second ahead of Skorczewski, Good, and Chuck Swenson.

Tony Konold (Cody Papke Photo)

Tony Konold’s first WISSOTA Modified win came in the 25-lap makeup feature from May 26. He took the lead at the drop of the green while Joe Thomas and Trevor Anderson swapped the second position. After a caution with three scored, Thomas secured second and Mike Stearns passed Anderson for third. The lead trio spread out around the cushion as the laps clicked away, until a slower car entered the equation with six laps to go; the leaders bunched up briefly, but Konold slid by the slower machine, and raced to the victory, his first of the season at the oval. Thomas was second with Stearns third, Anderson fourth and Nate Heinrich fifth.

In the night’s 20-lap Modified main event, Konold battled with Heinrich for the top spot early in the race. Konold secured the spot, and Scott Ward stole second from Heinrich after a lap-two restart. Ward threw a few moves at Konold, and stayed on the leader for a few laps, but Konold edged away and scored his second win of the season in Watertown. Ward was second ahead of Stearns, Heinrich and Thomas.

Brett Alexander paced the opening few laps of the WISSOTA Hornet feature before Dylan Tirrel made an inside pass to steal the lead and pull away for the victory. Alexander held on for second, while Bradley Rossow worked by Adam VanDerostyne for third in the closing laps. Josh Gebhart rounded out the top five.
