Matthews, Chernosky, Woodbeck and Bolt strike like lightning at Thunder City Speedway
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (June 6) - WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action was back underway Thursday at Thunder City Speedway, as the track had to deal with Mother Nature and run on their scheduled rain date to complete its third week of action.
Winners in WISSOTA-sanctioned action include Riley Matthews, Cole Chernosky, Trenton Woodbeck and Kyle Bolt.
Cameron Ellis and Spencer Reid brought the field to the green flag in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, followed by David Mitchell and Johnny Staal in row two. Ellis was the early leader, with a hornet’s nest behind him for top 10 spots. Mitchell was second, ahead of Andrew Piilo in third.
Farther back, two-time winner and ninth-starter Kyle Bolt was using the highside to his advantage, catching the fight for second among Mitchell, Piilo and Darren Wolframe. Bolt moved into third a lap later, and then took second a half lap later.
Just a lap later Bolt got by Ellis for the lead, and from there he checked out on the field and took the win ahead of Ellis, eighth-starter Wolframe, Piilo, and Brendan Makkinga to complete the top five in the non-stop feature.
In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Jeremy Britten and Nathan Roy held down the front row for the start of the 15-lap feature, followed by last week’s winner Danny Young in third and perennial threat Cole Chernosky in row two. Chernosky shot into the lead along the high side to take the early lead. He checked out immediately from the rest of the pack, while Toppozini displaced Britten to third, just ahead of Rick Simpson. Simpson got by Britten for third before a yellow regrouped the field.
Chernosky led the group back to the green, as Simpson shuffled into second, Toppozini was third and Shawn Polonoski was fourth ahead of Young. Simpson caught the frontstretch wall a bit, spun into the infield, and the caution was quickly back out.
Chernosky continued his dominant lead following the green, as Toppozini held second and Young raced in third. Polonoski was fourth.
As the laps began to click down, Simpson was back into the battle for a top-five spot with just two laps to go.
Out front Chernosky grabbed the checkered flag ahead of Toppozini, Young, and a tight battle between Polonoski and Simpson in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Jeff Kelly and Kolby Reed led the field of WISSOTA Midwest Mods to the green flag. Reed was the early leader, ahead of Kelly, Kyle Monteith, Woodbeck and David Simpson in the top five. Monteith moved to second a lap later, and Woodbeck raced into third. Simpson got by Woodbeck about half a lap later for third, and was closing in on Monteith at the halfway point. He made the pass on the next go round, but a caution for Davis brought the field to a halt.
Reed led the field back to the green, and as Monteith raced along the inside line into turn one and made it three wide for the lead coming out of turn two; contact was made with Simpson, who then hit Reed in the scuffle. Reed’s left front was destroyed, while Simpson appeared to suffer rear end damage and was also done for the night.
Kyle Monteith led the field back to the green, ahead of Glen Brown and Woodbeck. Monteith had a great restart, with Woodbeck in second and Kevin Monteith in third. Curtis Stieh was fourth, and Brown was fifth.
Woodbeck began to close on Kyle Monteith, trying high and low to gain the advantage. With two laps to go Woodbeck was right on Kyle’s bumper. With one lap to go, Monteith’s car was upset in turn two and Woodbeck took advantage to net the victory. Kyle had to settle for second, Kevin Monteith was third, Stieh finished his charge from 10th in fourth, and 12th-starter Tanner Henderson was fifth.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to the green by Wagner Macleod and Shawn Polonoski, but it was Colin Chaschuk who took the top spot early on from his third starting spot. Riley Matthews moved into second, Polonoski was third, and Scott McKinnon was fourth. A caution for Chernosky brought the field together once again.
Chaschuk led the field back to green, with pressure from Matthews and Scott McKinnon close behind. Curtis Stieh blasted by McKinnon into third at the halfway mark.
Chaschuk then shut it down along the frontstretch suddenly two laps later, with the field avoiding the disabled racer.
With the field back under green, Matthews led Stieh and Toppozini. Toppozini moved by Stieh into second, and began to pressure Matthews for the lead. Matthews shot out to a bit of an advantage, as Toppozini came under fire from Stieh for second; Stieh took the spot. Polonoski was fourth with two laps to go.
Matthews drove on to the victory, followed across the stripe by Stieh, Toppozini, Polonoski and Greg Foglia in the top five.
In the track’s Hornet class, Avery Chaschuk scored the victory.
