Audette scores Midwest Mod win and Copp finishes atop Pure Stocks at Lake of the Woods

By Anthony Leek

KENORA, ONTARIO (June 9) - The 2024 season at Lake of the Woods Speedway kicked off for the first time in the month of June as the Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and Four Cylinders took to the track after a long winter.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Nick Audette and Michael Copp.

The WISSOTA Pure Stock feature race was a caution-filled event. Multiple lead changes happened among Jake Mazur, Bryson McDonald, and Morgan McDonald throughout the race. Eventually, Mazur shuffled back and Morgan McDonald took the lead on the final restart. With a green, white, checkered finish pending, second-place driver and ninth-starter Michael Copp restarted right behind the leader. Coming to the white-flag lap, McDonald slipped up the track, opening the door for Copp. Keeping it together for the final two corners, Copp claimed the season opener feature win, repeating the same feat as 2023. Bryson McDonald, Stan Dueck, Morgan McDonald and Brodie McGowan were top-five finishers.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature, a pair of Nicks - Nick Hooper and Nick Audette - led the field to the green. At the wave of the green flag, Audette was able to get into the fast lane and pulled away from the field quickly. Christopher Leek tried to play catch-up after making it around Hooper for second. Rehill, who started fifth, managed to squeeze himself past enough cars to begin challenging Leek, and eventually made the pass for second. Audette rarely skipped a beat and was able to complete his first feature win in five years. Rehill was second ahead of Leek, Edward Bell and Patrick Davis.

In the Four Cylinder feature, Dustin Alcock was on a mission. Weaving past Sheldon McDonald, Kamea Mulholland, and Zachary Valiquette, the leader had over a half a track lead when rookie Katelynne Mazur-Defoort went up over the top of turn four. On the ensuing single-file restart, McDonald was slow to fire, giving Alcock enough time to pull away to claim his first feature win of 2024.

Thank you to all the amazing sponsors, volunteers, fans, and drivers for a great season opener. We return again on Sunday, June 16 for the Ashley Neniska Memorial races.
