Troftgruben, Thompson and Brauer battle to victory lane at Devils Lake Speedway
By Heather MacDonald
CRARY, ND (June 8) - Devils Lake Speedway held another action packed night of racing Saturday night. Brody Troftgruben, Randy Thompson and Braden Brauer grabbed the WISSOTA Dirt Track Series victories.
Brauer, of Eyota, MN, stormed his way to another win at the Devil’s Playground. Brauer started 10th in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, which went green to checkers without a caution. Veteran driver Stoney Kruk led early, and about four laps into the race, there was a solid three-wide battle for the second position among Trey Hess, Shane Swenson and Josh Barker.
Brauer reeled them in, and eventually took the lead away from Kruk. Hess was not done with his battle for the win, nor was Seth Klostreich; Hess, Klostreich and Brauer continued to battle into lap 11 - all within striking distance of each other. With two laps to go, Hess retired to the infield with a mechanical issue. Brauer raced out another win with Klostreich second and John Halvorson third. Dustin Ebensteiner finished fourth and Swenson fifth.
Randy Thompson, of Lakota ND, inched out his first win of the season with a close finish against Jory Berg in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Thompson started outside pole for the 20-lap feature, took an early lead and held on for dear life. Austin Hunter and Berg duked it out much of the race, and Jason Halvorson stuck his nose into the battle from time to time. Berg eventually got past Halvorson and Hunter to race Thompson to the line; Thompson beat Berg by .017 seconds. Hunter finished third, Halvorson was fourth and Ryne Uhrich was fifth.
The WISSOTA Late Model field was stacked with some heavy hitters; Brody Troftgruben, the two-time Devils Lake Speedway points champion, cruised his way to victory lane, but not without some challenges. About lap nine, Dustin Strand started reeling in Troftgruben, and when Strand was about to make his move, a caution came out on lap 13.
After the field was restacked, Strand made a few more attempts at Troftgruben before lap 19 when another caution came out. Strand settled for second place, Travis Robertson made his return to Late Models this season and held onto a third-place finish. Cole Schill finished fourth and Joey Pederson was fifth.
Brian Bellew had a tough battle with Tate Bullis and Jason Halvorson for much of the Pure Stock race. He took the lead from Halvorson with three to go for the win.
In the Western Renegade Non-wing Sprint feature, Myles Tomlinson took the back row challenge and elected to tag the tail of the field for the feature race. Tomlinson worked his way to the front with five to go, and the battle was on between Tomlinson and Eric Guyot. Tomlinson got by Guyot with three to go to cruise his way to victory lane for the second time this season.
