Peterson puts his Late Model in victory lane to start Challenge Series doubleheader at Monte

MONTEVIDEO, MN (June 7) - Opening the first of two nights of action at Fiesta City Speedway, 32 WISSOTA Street Stocks and 30 WISSOTA Late Models were in the pits, complemented by the WISSOTA Midwest Mods and Hornets, as the Montevideo, MN speedway hosted the WISSOTA Challenge Series and the Street Stock Tour. Rain was a persistent problem, but the track staff battled through and completed the program.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Tyler Peterson, Darren Engesser, Mike Jans, and Brady Albertson.

After several pop-up rain showers hampered the program prior to the WISSOTA Late Model feature, Searing and Gilbertson earned the front row for the night’s 40-lap, $3,000-to-win feature event with Gilbertson getting the upper hand on the initial start.

With Gilbertson out front, Searing and Peterson duked it out for second early in the race, which started with a long green-flag run for the first 19 circuits.

The race for fourth just behind the leaders was intense as well, as Crapser and Jeff Massingill dueled for top-five spots. Gilbertson continued to lead the first dozen laps at his hometown track until Searing shot by on lap 13 to take command. Once Searing took the lead, Peterson rolled up on Gilbertson as well, and the two battled for runner-up honors early until the field was slowed by the first caution on lap 19.

Searing took off out front following the restart, as Gilbertson roared back by Peterson into second. The caution flew once again for Joel Bennett, stacking up the field again and negating the Gilbertson pass.

On the ensuing restart, Searing was the leader while Peterson held off Gilbertson for the runner-up spot as the field flew down the backstretch to complete lap 20. From there, the race went the rest of the distance nonstop with Searing and Peterson trading blows. This included some contact on the restart and more as a car slowed directly in front of them, trying to exit onto the infield.

The first 39 laps were intense, but that was nothing compared to the final lap when Searing’s left rear tire lost air pressure, and he lost speed heading into the final set of turns. Peterson ripped the top of the speedway and blasted by as they raced out of turn four to the checkered flag to steal the win in thrilling fashion. Searing limped across the line in second with Gilbertson and Crapser quickly closing and finishing third and fourth respectively, just ahead of Massingill, who rounded out the top five.

Mike Jans took the lead to start the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Justin Vogel drove to the front with 10 laps to go, but rain began to fall four laps later and the race was halted.

When the race resumed, Jans made a last-lap pass on Vogel to get his second feature win of the season. Vogel had to settle for second, eighth-starter Ty Agen was third, 14th-starter Kyle Anderson finished his charge in fourth, and Eric Riley was fifth.

Darren Engesser led the entire WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature for his first win of the year. Matt Everts, Justin Bjorklund, Derek Rieck and Haley Dykhoff were top-five finishers.

Adam VanDerostyne took the lead to begin the WISSOTA Hornet feature. Brady Albertson took the lead on lap two and went on to get his first win of the season. Kole Kampsen, VanDerostyne, Bradley Rossow and Jerik Stabler rounded out the top five.

The Pure Stock feature was led by three different drivers in the first three laps. Sophie Anderson led lap one, Carter Rice led lap two, and Coltyn Schuler led lap three. On lap four the rain began to fall; when racing resumed, Schuler did not give up the lead as he went on to win his fourth straight feature.
