Peterson, Sabraski, Reinke, Dykhoff and Rohner rack up wins Friday at I-94 Speedway
By Ron Krog
FERGUS FALLS, MN (May 5) - The 2024 racing season was off and running Friday night, but not without hard work from the I-94 Speedway track crew. Several days of rain and a light mist all afternoon and into the evening kept Don Shaw and his track prep crew very busy; after about a 20-minute delay, a nice field of 184 cars went to battle in their respective classes.
WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners including Shane Sabraski, Tyler Peterson, Nate Reinke, Kyle Dykhoff, and Jeff Rohner. Ben Wolden was victorious in the Gen X Late Models.
WISSOTA sanctioning for the Hornets class is new for 2024, and a solid 19-car field put on a great show. A pair of strong southern runners went at it for the whole race, with Jeff Rohner the early leader ahead of Matt Dittman. Dittman was able to move in on Rohner, and the two battled alongside each other before Dittman took charge. A late caution with three laps to go allowed Rohner to steal the lead and hang on for a hard-fought win. Brady Albertson, 11th-starter Christian Kast and 16th-starter Isabelle Gronwold completed the top five.
A fantastic field of 37 WISSOTA Street Stocks came from four surrounding states and Canada to begin their 2024 seasons at I-94 Speedway. Tommy Pogones and Ty Agen were side by side for several laps to start the feature, until a spin knocked Pogones out of the lead. Kyle Dykhoff and Eric Riley, along with Jeff Ekdahl, moved in to vie for top honors and soon Dykhoff showed just how strong he is; he took the lead and got the win with Ekdahl second and Riley third, just ahead of the talented young Agen. Greg Jose was fifth, while defending track champ Cole Greseth charged from 22nd to sixth in the feature.
To no one’s surprise the WISSOTA Midwest Mods had the largest field of cars on hand, with 38 entered. Nate Reinke and Mike Nichols led the field to the green flag with Reinke grabbing the early lead. As the race progressed, Rodin moved by Nichols and was soon joined by Weight, who showed his speed and moved into second. Out front, however, nobody had anything for the lightning-fast Reinke, as he grabbed the win in quick feature that ended in 9 minutes and 58 seconds.
Matt Schow was third, Nichols was fourth and Rodin completed the top five.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks also joined the show with a solid field of 19 cars on the grounds. The experienced veteran Eric Martini was the early leader in the feature. As is many times the case in this class, fourth-starter Shane Sabraski made his way to the front and got under Martini for the lead. The chase was on after that, as Dexton Koch charged from his sixth starting spot to second, and Jordan Henkemeyer flew from eighth to take third. Sabraski drove off to the win ahead of Koch, Henkemeyer, Trevor Nelson and Dylan Nelson in the top five.
The biggest race of the night featured a dynamite 32-car field of WISSOTA Modifieds. Shane Sabraski and Don Eischens led the field to the green, and they went at it hard for the first six laps before Sabraski slipped away. Farther back Tyler Peterson charged from his eighth starting spot to battle Eischens and it was a dandy; Peterson finally grabbed second behind race winner Sabraski, who picked up his 884th win of his career. Ryan Gierke, Landon Atkinson and Zach Johnson completed the top five.
The WISSOTA Late Models also had a very good 28-car field on hand. Tyler Peterson picked up where he left off last season and just keeps on winning. He outran a very fast Kevin Burdick, who kept the race close but just could not run down the dominating Peterson. A pair of racers who put on really impressive runs were Kollin Hibdon and Cole Searing. Hibdon came from 10th to finish third, and Cole Searing came from 16th to fourth. Lee Grosz, who raced a Modified in 2023, was also in a Late Model for the program and finished fifth in the feature, looking comfortable in that car.
Ben Wolden dominated the Gen X Late Model field for his 48th career win in the class.
I-94 Speedway thanks Sam Zender Floor Installation and Shaw Trucking for sponsoring the first night of its doubleheader.
