Mod Nationals night two features at Ogilvie go to Gierke, Koch, Smith, Holtquist and Patrin
By Tami Jo Kuehn
OGILVIE, MN (May 26) - Sunday night’s race program at Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway wrapped up the 2024 Minnesota Truck Headquarters Modified Nationals. One-hundred and three drivers signed in for the night of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series race action and they put on an incredible night of door-to-door racing.
At the end of the night, winners included Jake Smith, Dexton Koch, Ryan Gierke, Dustin Holtquist and Payson Patrin.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds started the night’s features, and they struggled in the beginning to put together green-flag laps. Once underway, William Moelter and Jake Smith were side by side for first with Jason VandeKamp, David Swearingen and Zach Benson three wide for third. Moelter and Smith battled for a few laps, when Smith edged out the point. Moelter held second, but was soon under pressure from VandeKamp and Benson and they raced three wide for the runner-up spot. VandeKamp broke away with second and set his sights on Smith for the lead.
Battle for positions remained three wide for multiple spots throughout the field, as VandeKamp reeled in Smith. With seven laps to go, VandeKamp was within a second of Smith with slower traffic in sight. Smith felt the heat of Vandy to his rear, but Smith made his way through the slower traffic effortlessly and took the checkers. VandeKamp settled for second with Swearingen, Benson and Moelter completing the top five.
Terran Spacek and Cole Chernosky brought the WISSOTA Super Stocks around the Big O for the next feature, and when the green dropped, Jordan Henkemeyer made it three wide for the lead. Spacek was in first at the end of lap one, as Henkemeyer and Chernosky began to feel the heat themselves from Koch, who secured second after a three-wide fight for the spot. Koch chased down and caught Spacek, and then applied pressure for the lead before a caution was triggered.
Spacek was in command as the race resumed, but Koch sped to his door; Spacek and Koch pulled away from the field and began a multi-lap battle for first. The top two drivers remained glued to one another and swapped first at the line lap after lap. Koch had a slight lead over Spacek for a couple laps, but as they caught slower traffic, Spacek was back alongside Koch’s door. They again swapped the top point until Koch finally broke free from Spacek. Koch then put space between himself and the competition over the final couple laps and took the win. Spacek, Dylan Kromschroeder, Matthew Larson and Cole Chernosky completed the top five.
Koch also earned the Superior Fuel Sweep bonus for winning each night of the Mod Nationals.
J.T. Johnson and Kaden Blaeser brought the WISSOTA Modifieds to the line for the next feature and Johnson took the lead early on. The first lap was scored before a caution occurred, but Johnson remained in control. Blaeser held second and kept close to Johnson, while another yellow flew.
Johnson and Blaeser retained first and second on the restart, before Jody Bellefeuille raced past both and took over the lead. Johnson came back to challenge Bellefeuille and they were side by side for the lead. Bellefeuille broke away from Johnson, as Ryan Gierke picked his way forward from ninth. Gierke got by Bellefeuille for the top spot, and began to check out on the field. As the top-five runners began to catch traffic, Blaeser and Bellefeuille raced for second, while Clayton Wagamon and Johnson fought for fourth. Cars covered the entire race surface with Gierke still cruising on his own in the lead.
With lapped traffic all around, Bellefeuille, Blaeser, Wagamon and Johnson were nearly four wide for second on the white flag lap. They remained close until the checkers flew, with Gierke grabbing the victory ahead of Bellefeuille, Johnson, Wagamon and Blaeser.
Tyler Larson, Tommy Bawden and Dustin Holtquist shot out of turn four and raced three wide for first when the green dropped for the WISSOTA Mod Four feature. A caution quickly occurred for a mess of cars in turn one and the field was reset.
On the following restart, Dustin Holtquist took the lead and the same top three drivers battled for first before Robert Holtquist suddenly rolled on the frontstretch. The race went red; Robert was okay.
With the field back under green, Tyler Larson took the lead and immediately stretched it out. Dustin Holtquist reeled Larson in as laps passed by, and soon Holquist was challenging for the lead. Dustin Holtquist took the point, set his cruise the remaining laps and grabbed the win with Larson, Bawden, Connor Hass and Blake Hawker in the top five.
The WISSOTA Hornets wrapped up the night, led to green flag by Jenna Hagemann and Payson Patrin. As the green waved, Patrin quickly established a solid lead. Hagemann held onto second with Jonathan Aderman in third. After a few laps, Aderman retired to the infield and Bobie Arnes assumed third. Patrin held the lead for the entirety of the race and took the checkered flags with Hagemann, Arnes, Anthony Jensen and Randy Jacoboski in the top five.
