Opening night of MMN at Ogilvie goes to Sabraski, Koch, VandeKamp, Bawden and Jacoboski on Saturday
By Tami Jo Kuehn
OGILVIE, MN (May 25) - With a lengthy rain shower before races, a few sprinkles during the show, and threat of more rain over the course of the evening, the Minnesota Truck Headquarters Modified Nationals powered by Wehrs Machine and Superior Fuel beat the odds and was completed.
Nearly 100 drivers signed in Saturday night for WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action, with Shane Sabraski, Dexton Koch, Jason VandeKamp, Tommy Bawden and Randy Jacoboski taking home the big checks.
Corey Mehrwerth and Wyatt Boyum took their places on row one as the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds kicked off the night’s features. As the race began, Mehrwerth snagged the lead, while Boyum held second with VandeKamp at his side. Drivers raced three and nearly four wide on the track surface, with Mehrwerth still in command.
VandeKamp made his way into second and set chase after the leader. He tracked down Mehrwerth and began a battle for first through heavy lapped traffic. VandeKamp broke away into the top spot, though Mehrwerth kept close through traffic.
VandeKamp put space between him and Mehrwerth with a few laps to go, and drove on to take the win. Cole Boston, Jake Smith and Boyum rounded out the top five.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were next on the schedule with Sabraski and Dexton Koch on the front row. As the green waved, Koch sped off in the lead, with Sabraski and Cole Chernosky in tow. Koch quickly established a good lead as Sabraski also separated from the field. As the top two sped away, Chernosky felt the heat from Denis Czech; a couple laps passed with Chernosky and Czech nose to nose for third, but Chernosky pulled ahead of Czech.
Simultaneously, Koch encountered slower traffic and Sabraski began to close the gap. Koch and Sabraski were in lapped traffic during the final couple laps, but Koch held on and took the victory. Sabraski, Czech, Chernosky and Jordan Henkemeyer completed the top five.
Sabraski and Clayton Wagamon battled side by side when the WISSOTA Modifieds took the green, with other racers going three and nearly four wide for positions. Cars filled the track from the high to low groove as several cautions kept the drivers slowed; when the race resumed, Sabraski had the lead. Wagamon and Landon Atkinson battled for second as other drivers again raced three wide for position. Atkinson took second and raced high along the wall to try and reel in Sabraski.
As they caught the end of the field, Sabraski and Atkinson had a solid lead. It did not take long for the leaders to be in heavy lapped traffic, and Sabraski could feel the pressure of Atkinson with laps winding down. Sabraski held on, however, and took the win. Landon Atkinson settled for second with J.T. Johnson, Kennedy Swan and Jeremy Nelson (06) top-five finishers.
The WISSOTA Mod Fours took the clay for the next event, and as the green waved, Tyler Larson, Robert Holtquist and Tommy Bawden raced three wide for first. Bawden claimed the point and sped away while Connor Hass and Jordan Fischer took second and third.
Drivers began to space out with Bawden in command, as the battle for second began to heat up. Fischer moved alongside Hass, while Tyler Larson and Dustin Holtquist joined the battle. Fischer, Hass, Larson and Holtquist raced very close for second through fifth when Fischer’s car spun and the yellow waved.
The field was reset putting Bawden back with his competition, however he was unphased by the realignment, and sped away again when the green waved. Hass, Larson and Dustin Holtquist resumed their three-way fight for second, which lasted until the checkered flag. Bawden took the win, while Larson, Hass, Holtquist and Fischer completed the top five.
The WISSOTA Hornets wrapped up the night’s events with Bobie Arnes and Jenna Hagemann in a fight for first. The top two drivers remained glued to one another as the laps passed. Arnes edged out the lead a couple of times, however Hagemann kept close and did not let Arnes get away.
The top two drivers remained door to door, and on the final lap, they caught a slower car. As they went down the back chute, contact occurred between Arnes and Hagemann, collecting both leaders in the infield. Arnes was charged with the caution and drivers were realigned with Hagemann in the front. Randy Jacoboski, Cade Johnson and Hagemann went three wide as the race resumed, and Jacoboski nosed out the lead. Jacoboski led the final lap of the race, and took his first feature win ever. Cade Johnson finished second and Hagemann was the final finisher in third.
