Friday, May 17

We made the trip to Red Cedar Speedway on Friday, May 17 for Heroes’ Night. The car count was, to me, kind of low. There were 11 Hornets, 17 Late Models, 12 Midwest Mods, 10 Mods, 12 Street Stocks and 18 Super Stocks for a total of 80 cars by my count.

In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Cody Kummer completed a sweep of the night with the feature win, ahead of Gunnar Watkins and Kyle Genett.

Next up was the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. In the 15-lap feature David Simpson held off Travis Anderson and Brady Larson.

In the Super Stocks, Kolby Kiehl started the 18-lap feature from outside of the front row and led many laps until eighth-starter Terran Spacek overtook him and went on to take the win. Kiehl, Rick Simpson, Jesse Redetzke and the No. 1M of Alex Myers were in the top five.

The 20-lap Modified main event was won by Mike Anderson, who slipped by Kevin Adams for the win. Cory Mahder moved up from the sixth starting spot to finish in the top three.

In the 20-lap Late Model feature there was an ugly incident in the second turn involving several cars. When the 20 laps were finished, only seven cars remained. Chad Mahder took the win over the No. 7c of Jim Carlson. Kaanta, Buddy Hanestad and Aaron Wilson completed the top five.

With only a couple of caution flags during the entire racing event, time passed quickly and we were in our vehicle and on the way home right at 10 p.m., which put us home around 1 p.m.

Saturday, May 18

ABC Raceway’s opener fell by the wayside thanks to wet grounds, so we headed to Rice Lake Speedway on Saturday night for the Kids Night special. Boy, did they put some effort into the Kids Night event: they gave away more than 100 bikes!

I don’t remember seeing the huge amount of kids and parents turning out for the event any other time. When it came time for racing, the grandstands were pretty much full!

When it came time for racing, there were 93 cars in the five classes. In the Midwest Modified feature, it was good to be in a No. 40. Tyler Vernon grabbed the win in his No. 40jr, Nick Traynor was second in his No. 40, Mike Schnider was third, Blake Adams was fourth in his No. 40D, and finally Kenny Kincaid completed the top five.

Terran Spacek swept the WISSOTA Super Stocks feature, with Ryan Olson getting second ahead of Alex Myers. Those two second generation racers were followed by their dads, with Curt Myers getting fourth and Eric Olson getting fifth.

Next came the WISSOTA Modifieds. In the feature a No. 40 was the winner. Which No. 40, you may ask? Kevin Adams’ No. 40 of course! Joe Chaplin, Jr. finished second, and Hallquist was third.

Next races for us will hopefully be on the tundra, with Gondik Law Speedway trying for its opener this weekend, May 24. More next time.
