It seems so different this season, having not raced here yet on the tundra. Typically any race scheduled in April and in May are just that — scheduled. The breeze off Lake Superior brings cold weather, rain, snow, etc. and keeps our tracks too wet. We tried racing on a wet track a number of times over the years, and it took the racing surface weeks or perhaps months to return to a raceable condition.

The nasty weather has done that again here at Gondik Law Speedway. GLS held a practice on Wednesday, May 15. Joanne and I went out there, but there was not much going on. A few cars showed up to run laps. Most notable in my eyes was Travis Budisalovich from Minneapolis, MN. He looked just as hooked up as he did when he won the track championship in the WISSOTA Late Model. I believe Eric Lillo was also on hand in the No. 24 Late Model.

There were several other cars out trying to get in some laps in the Modifieds, Hornets, Midwest Modifieds and Super Stocks. We did not make it all the way through, because of the temperature and wind off the lake.

The opener unfortunately fell to weather once again, and the next show for the speedway was set to be the Minnesota Mod Nationals during Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday, May 11

We have been able to take in some races at Rice Lake Speedway on Saturday nights. Last Saturday they presented a Springtime Modified Special paying $1,200 to the winner. They had 21 cars show up on a cool night. For the big money, young Kaden Blaeser bested veteran Kevin Adams, Mike Anderson, Cole Spacek and Shaun Kreyer in the top five. Kennedy Swan started sixth and held onto it at the finish.

I must say that I was very impressed with Kaden Blaeser, who is running the red No. 43 and is only, I think, in his second year in the Mods.

In other action, the Super Stock feature went to Simon Wahlstrom. In the WISSOTA Mid Mods Blake Adams won from the sixth starting spot. Andrew Hanson continued his winning ways in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, winning out over veteran Danny Richards. In the Pure Stock feature event it was Brent Mindock for the win.
