Severe weather shortens River Cities program after Jose and Schow score bullring feature wins

By Steven Young

GRAND FORKS, ND (May 17) - Greg Jose and Matt Schow won in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action at River Cities Speedway Friday night, before the races came to an early end due to severe weather. Schow's win was his 22nd-career Bullring victory, while Jose broke a long dry spell, picking up his second-career win in Grand Forks and first since August 30, 2013.

Jose and James Meagher made up the front row for the WISSOTA Street Stock 20-lap main event, with Meagher leading most of the opening circuit, before Jose took the lead off turn four.

Weston Ramsrud moved his “Ol’ Relic” into second and brought Shane Swenson with him, as Jose built a half-straightaway advantage early.

As Jose started to pull away, Trey Hess joined Ramsrud and Swenson in a three-car battle for second before Meagher brought out the only caution of the race as he suffered mechanical woes.

Ramsrud and Swenson made contact on the ensuing restart, allowing Jose to reopen his lengthy advantage out front as Hess moved into second and Aaron Blacklance took third.

Jose continued on to victory over Hess, Blacklance, Ramsrud, and Seth Klostreich. Jose, a longtime River Cities Speedway regular, broke a nearly 11-year drought at the speedway with Friday's victory.

Alex Johnson and Cylen Vargason led the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature to green, but a pair of cautions before a lap was completed slowed the pace at the start.

When the race went green for good on the third attempt, Schow, who originally started fifth, took the lead in turns one and two and brought Jory Berg with him into second.

Opening night winner Austin Hunter followed into third as lightning started to show up on the horizon to the west. Schow remained the leader with six to go as the leaders started working lapped traffic.

Schow led every lap en route to his 22nd-career River Cities feature win over Berg, Hunter, Jamie Dietzler, and Alex Johnson. Just as Schow took the checkers, everyone started bolting for the exits as high winds and eventual rain ended the evening.

Mike Balcaen, Jesse Teunis, and Dustin Strand won the heat races in the WISSOTA Late Models. Mark Dobmeier and Wade Nygaard pocketed the pair of NOSA Sprint heat races, and Dexter Dvergsten and Kate Taves picked up Lightning Sprint heat wins.

A date for the makeup features will be announced at a later time.
