Schow, Ussatis and Aberle finish the season of speed at Devils Lake Speedway with feature wins
By Heather MacDonald
CRARY, ND (August 31-September 1) - Devils Lake Speedway hosted two shows over Labor Day weekend, with WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners including Daniel Aberle, Matt Schow, and Kasey Ussatis.
Twenty-two WISSOTA Midwest Mods were on hand for the rescheduled 8th annual Midwest Mod Golden Hammer Classic on Saturday night. The feature race, set up by passing points from dual heat races, featured three-wide battles and hard charges to the front of the field.
When the dust settled, the front row ran away from the field with last year's winner Brennon Weight finishing second to first-time Golden Hammer victor Matt Schow. Preston Carr was third ahead of Zach Reinke, who picked his way forward from 14th to fourth. Jamie Dietzler finished fifth.
Eric Haugland was the hard charger of the race, as he made his way forward 13 positions to finish eighth.
In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Daniel Aberle took the checkered flag for old times’ sake on Saturday night. Trey Hess was hot on his tail to finish second, while Kasey Ussatis was third. Mike Mund and Austin Dueck completed the top five.
The home track rules Pure Stock feature was highly controversial. The feature winner was ultimately DQ’ed at the scale and the win was awarded to Joe Armstrong.
In the Non-Wing Nationals, two features were held for race fans, with Jack Berger and Jeremy Lizakowski both winning their respective races.
On Sunday night, action reconvened at Devils Lake Speedway. In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, an early race pileup plagued the feature, with multiple drivers forced to retire, including Hess.
Out front, Ussatis cruised to victory lane, while Dueke moved five spots forward to finish second. “The Legend” Stoney Kruk was third, Mike Mund was fourth and Drew Peterson rounded out the top five. Hess was crowned the 2024 track points champion.
In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Schow survived the caution-filled feature to take the checkered flag with Austin Hunter finishing second. Reise Stenberg charged forward 11 spots to third, while Jarod Klein was fourth. Carr completed the top five. Ryne Uhrich won the points championship for the 2024 season.
In the Pure Stock feature, Ryker Vetter drove to his first feature win ever. Joe Armstrong won the points championship.
For night two of the North Dakota Non-Wing Nationals, the main feature was nothing short of excitement. Ken Hron made a huge last-lap, last-corner pass by Chris Lewis to win at the line by .096 seconds. Jeremy Lizakowski finished third, Chad Wulff was fourth and Jori Hughes finished fifth.
