Summer sweat pays off Friday for Peterson, Froemming, Riley and Rohner at I-94 Speedway

By Ron Krog

FERGUS FALLS, MN (August 2) - It looks like summer has arrived in the upper Midwest, as temps in the low 90s tested race fans and the 97 racers who made their way out for some Friday night fun at I-94 emr Speedway.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners during the hot and steamy night included Tyler Peterson (Late Models and Modifieds), Justin Froemming (Midwest Mods), Eric Riley (Street Stocks), and Jeff Rohner (Hornets).

In the WISSOTA Late Models, Peterson quickly moved from eighth at the start to third. During lap five he moved into the lead, passing Sam Zender and Danny Vang for the spot. As the laps counted down, Don Shaw and Dave Mass were on the move, into third and fourth, respectively. Peterson picked up the eventual victory, with Vang doing a nice job in finishing second. Shaw, Mass, and Sam Zender completed the top five.

Peterson was not done yet, as he rolled out his WISSOTA Modified and sat on the pole for that feature. He quickly took the lead, but with five laps complete Jeremy Nelson was closing in; Nelson was running the bottom, as Peterson ran up top. The shrewd Peterson switched to the bottom just in time and was able to open up his lead for the win, while Nelson was strong in second. Brady Gerdes was third, 10th-starter Dusty Bitzen was fourth, and Landon Atkinson completed the top five.

It was a wild WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature, as a six-car pileup on lap one left Jamie Norman upside down and several cars in need of some serious repairs.

With five laps complete, Justin Froemming had already moved from his ninth-starting spot to fourth; he then caught Haley Dykhoff and Ron Saurer, who were going at it for second behind race leader Taylor Bitzan.

With five laps left in the race, Dykhoff broke, leaving the battle to Bitzan and Froemming, and Froemming made a pass for the win coming off turn four on the last lap. Bitzan settled for second, with Saurer grabbing third. Nate Reinke was fourth, while 11th-starter Jon Carlson completed the top five.

Tanner Freese and Tommy Pogones went back and forth for the lead to begin the 21-car WISSOTA Street Stock feature, with Cory Dykhoff third, and Joe Martin and Eric Riley fighting for fourth. With only four laps left, Riley made a nice pass to go from fourth to second, before a cloud of smoke came off Pogones’ car a lap later and he slowed. Riley took the lead and never looked back for the win, with Dykhoff second just ahead of Ty Agen and Joe Martin in a very good race. Scott Horn completed the top five.

The WISSOTA Hornets had a good three-car battle at the front as Bobie Arnes, Jeff Rohner and Payson Patrin were three-wide several times. With six laps to go, Patrin passed Arnes for the lead, with Rohner displacing Arnes to third. Four laps later, with just trips around I-94 to go, Chase Pourrier fought Rohner for second and they swapped spots. In the end, Rohner was declared the winner as Patrin did not pass tech. Arnes was also DQ’d, with the official top-five rundown including Rohner, Pourrier, Kevin Wahl, Nick Shirley and Christian Kast.

Tony Croninger won a very entertaining Gen X Late Model race to round out action at the speedway.
