Tuesday, August 30

We headed out on August 30 to the Head of the Lakes fair for a night of racing at Gondik Law Speedway. On the menu was another KME Late Model Series race, which only runs at GLS this season. Also on the card were the WISSOTA Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Hornets. With about half of the usual cars running, the turnout was what you’d expect for a four-division program at under 50 cars in attendance. Since it was a KME event there were only the usual WISSOTA Late Models in attendance, at 16 cars. Modifieds were next with 13 cars, the Hornets brought 11, and the Pure Stocks had six cars.

Out of the notable items from the heat races, I noticed Dave Flynn, who won the first heat of the Late Models, has show much improvement since he moved to the class a year ago.

In the Late Model feature, the 25-lapper did not begin well for one of the newer drivers to the class. Skeeter Estey’s car was sent into a wild ride as he made his approach into turn one and it stuck, the momentum taking it up and over many times in front of the entire field. The following cars scrambled to avoid him. Estey was later treated in Hibbing at the hospital once they got back to their area from Superior, and his car had showed heavy damage.

When the 25 laps were complete, Pat Doar came out on top after starting on the outside of row one. Flynn finished second from the third starting spot, Billy Kendall III was third, Kevin Burdick was fourth and Danny Vang was fifth.

Another LM rookie, Johnny Broking, started ninth and finished in sixth. Seventh was 16th-starter Travis Budiaslovich. Eighth went to Jeff Massingill, while Darrell Nelson was ninth and Robbie Cooper completed the top 10.

I found out that Doar had a celebrity helping in his pits on Tuesday – none other than touring Late Model driver Tim McCreadie! It was Doar’s 56th feature win at GLS in the WISSOTA Late Models. He has a total of 66 feature wins overall at the speedway, with the 10 others coming in the WISSOTA Modifieds and Super Stocks. His win total at the speedway puts him as the all-time leader in that division.

In other action, the 20-lap Modified feature was won by Darrell Nelson, with Jody Bellefeuille second, Jack Rivord third, 10th-starter Brandon Copp fourth, and 12th-starting veteran racer Al Uotinen in fifth.

In the 12-lap Pure Stock feature, Tom Treviranus was the winner for the sweep of action. Aaron Bernick was second and Tom’s daughter, Jesse Treviranus, was third. They were the only finishers in the five-car feature. Shane Basina was unable to start the feature due to car problems in the heat.

In the WISSOTA Hornet feature Justin Schelitzche took the win from the pole. DeJay Jarecki and Carson Gotelaere battled for second, with Jarecki taking it. Nikota Larson moved from the seventh position to finish fourth and Riley Ament ended up in the fifth spot.

It was also mentioned during the night that Shane Sabraski had suffered a heart attack over the weekend. We wish him a speedy recovery.

With the weather the way it was for Friday and Saturday, and not feeling well, we took the rest of the weekend off. See you at a track soon!
