Skorczewski and Vogel share the spotlight at Brown County but big event gets shortened by rain

ABERDEEN, SD (July 19) - The Dacotah Rumble roared to life for the 2024 edition with NLRA Late Models and the Dirt Race Central Street Stock Tour on tap for race fans. A total of 75 drivers were in attendance with $2,566 on the line for the NLRA WISSOTA Late Models and $1,000 on tap for the WISSOTA Street Stocks.

Justin Vogel and Josh Skorczewski found their ways to the pay days and Buffalo Wild Wings victory lane in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action.

A total of 38 Street Stocks were in attendance, and after all the heat races and two B features were completed, the 26-car field was set. Jayden Michaelsohn and Billie Christ drew the front row for the 25-lap feature.

Christ grabbed the early lead, but was under fire immediately from Justin Vogel. The two drivers battled side by side for the opening laps until Vogel took the lead on lap four. The field began to maneuver around the very racey surface, until caution struck with Jeromy Thorstenson spinning in turn three with five laps scored.

On the restart, Kyle Bertram blasted by Christ to take over second and began to battle Vogel. The battle was cut short, as Darek Turner was spun by Clay Gentzkow. The field was restacked and Vogel used the restart to his advantage, opening up a slight gap.

While Vogel enjoyed his lead, Andy Rossow cracked the top three. As the race continued, Bertram found the cushion to his liking and began to track down Vogel. He closed in fast and was nearly even with Vogel with only seven laps to go. The lead duo began to navigate lapped traffic over the next lap and Bertram took full advantage, using a slide job to get by Vogel into the lead.

Vogel worked back to the inside of Bertram and threw his own slider to regain the top spot. Bertram threw everything he had at Vogel in the final two circuits but came up short as Vogel held on and scored the win, his sixth of the season.

Rossow, Matt Goth, and 14th-starter Kyle Dykhoff were top-five finishers.

Josh Skorczewski (Cody Papke)

Next up was the NLRA WISSOTA Late Models with 37 drivers in attendance. After all the preliminary action, 25 drivers made the show for the 30-lap feature with $2,566 on the line. Josh Skorczewski and Matt Gilbertson redrew the front row for the A main, with Skorczewski the initial leader. As the field came out of turn four, contact between Dustin Strand and Mitch Johnson sent Johnson spinning in front of the field and ended up collecting 10 different drivers with eight of them unable to continue. It was a complete restart after the pileup was cleaned up. As the field took the green flag, Cole Schill spun in turn three, collecting Eric Edwards and ending his night.

The third attempt at the start of the race finally stuck and Gilbertson grabbed the lead, setting a blistering pace. Gilbertson began to close on lapped traffic by lap five, and as he caught Greg Friestad, Gilbertson had a big run out of turn two and ended up rear ending Friestad. The night was over for both drivers due to heavy damage.

Skorczewski inherited the lead, with Strand and Denver Nickeson in the top three. When they took the green, Skorczewski and Strand pulled away from the field and they started battling for the lead with each other. Strand used the inside lane and drove into the top spot with 18 to go, opening up a gap on Skorczewski.

Four laps later Strand was in lapped traffic, struggling to get by Johnson. Strand threw a slide job in turn four, but did not clear Johnson and they got together, destroying the back end of Strand’s car and front end of Johnson’s.

Back under green Skorczewski retook the lead, with Nickeson and Jayson Good on his tail. On the restart, a new challenger entered the picture as Mike Greseth started to pound the cushion, moving from fifth to second in two laps. Greseth began to reel in Skorczewski and the lead duo began swapping lines at each end of the raceway; Greseth took the lead a few times down the back straightaway, but came up short along the frontstretch. The leaders came to the white before caution struck once again, this time due to Thomas Weisgram spinning off the top of turn two.

The caution set up a green-white-checkered finish; Skorczewski blasted out to the lead on the restart and fended off Greseth for the win and the $2,566 check.

Nickeson, 17th-starter Brody Troftgruben, and 15th-starter Chase Gelling completed the top five.
