Thunder City fans see Chernosky chop up competition in two classes at Thunder City Speedway

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (June 26) - A healthy field of racers were on hand for action Wednesday, June 26 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, as Thunder City Speedway hosted a night of regular race action at the track.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Cole Chernosky, who made it to victory lane twice, as well as David Simpson and Kyle Bolt.

In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Kathryn Stieh and Cory Ward led the field to the green flag. Stieh was the early leader, in a tight battle among the top six. After a handful of laps of green flag action, Brendan Makkinga was second, with pressure from Justin Tougas, David Mitchell, and A.J. Kellar in the top five. As they began to catch lapped traffic, Tougas, Kellar and Mitchell were three wide for third position, followed closely behind by Kyle Bolt, who started ninth. A caution regrouped the field, for the window net coming down on Stieh’s car, sending her to the back.

Makkinga took over out front for the restart, with Kellar second, Tougas third, and Bolt on the move in fourth. Half a lap later, Bolt moved into second.

For the next lap, Bolt raced alongside Makkinga, taking the spot at the start/finish line. A couple laps later, Kellar moved into second, displacing Makkinga to third. Darren Wolframe was fourth and Tougas completed the top five. A caution fell for a spun racer in between turns three and four. The restart was called back due to a spun car as well.

With the field under green, Bolt led Makkinga and Kellar in the top three, with Kellar using the high line to scoot by Makkinga, and he chipped away at the leader’s advantage. Kellar ran out of time, however, and Bolt drove on to the win ahead of Kellar and Makkinga in the podium spots. Twelfth-starter Andrew Piilo and Wolframe were top-five finishers.

Ryan House and Josh Oleksuk led the field of WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag, with Tom Smart and Cole Chernosky behind in the second row. Chernosky shot into the lead off of turn one and took off out front, as they were three wide for position in the top five behind him. Toppozini took second, while Danny Young, Smart and Rick Simpson completed the top five. Oleksuk then found the wall out of turn two and the caution fell.

Chernosky led the restart, followed by Young in second, and Toppozini and Shawn Polonoski in a side-by-side battle for third, with Polonoski grabbing the spot before spinning out in turn four. The caution flew and Polonoski headed to the back of the back.

Chernosky led the restart, with Toppozini using the highline to get by Young to complete the lap, with Simpson close behind in fourth. John Garrity and Nathan Roy fought for fifth, several car lengths back.

The top five became strung out, with Chernosky driving on to the win ahead of Toppozini, Young, Simpson and 11th-starter Garrity in the top five.

David Simpson (Paul Phillips Photo)

Trenton Woodbeck was the early leader in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, before the yellow flew for a spun racer with one lap complete.

Woodbeck led the field back to green, but the start was called back by the flagman. On the ensuing try, Woodbeck held the lead, with Jeff Kelly in second and David Simpson on the move into third. Curtis Stieh was fourth before another caution brought the field under yellow.

Following the restart, Simpson dove deeply into turn one and into the lead, with Woodbeck second under pressure from Tanner Ulakovic. Jeff Kelley was fourth and Matthew Mitchell was fifth.

Woodbeck began to close back in on Simpson in the lead, drawing to his rear bumper and looking for a way by. Lap after lap they toured the Ontario oval separated by a car length or less at times. As they came through the back of the field, Simpson had pulled back out to a several car-length advantage, holding on to the checkered flag. Woodbeck held second, Ulakovic was third, Mitchell was fourth and Stieh was fifth.

Adam Dennhardt and Wagner Macleod held the front row for the WISSOTA Modifieds, with Scott McKinnon driving from third into the lead along the high line, while Toppozini used the low line to get second. Chernosky was making up time along the high side in third, with Joel Cryderman and Polonoski in a side by side battle for fifth. Toppozini then spun by himself into turn four and the caution flew.

Following the restart, McKinnon held the top spot, with Cryderman pressuring Chernosky for second, right on the bumper of McKinnon. Cryderman drove by both into the lead along the low side, with McKinnon second and Chernosky third along the high line.

McKinnon slid Cryderman on the next lap, but Cryderman retained the lead. Close behind was Chernosky, waiting for his chance; he began to move to the low line and took second the next time by.

With three laps to go, Cryderman and Chernosky moved away from McKinnon, with Chernosky drawing to his bumper with one lap to go. Toppozini entered the fray in third. In turns three and four, Chernosky dove to the inside of Cryderman and completed the last turn slide job, taking the victory in an exciting race for the fans. Cryderman settled for second, Toppozini charged back to third, McKinnon was fourth and Colin Chaschuk was fifth.

In the Hornets, Michael Shalley charged from ninth at the start to score the victory.
