As Mods go to war at Ogilvie, VandeKamp and Bawden bring their open-wheelers to victory lane

By Tami Jo Kuehn

OGILVIE, MN (July 11) - Thursday night kicked off night one of the fourth annual Mod Wars, featuring USMTS Modifieds taking on WISSOTA-legal Modifieds, with WISSOTA Dirt Track Series support from the Midwest Modifieds and Mod Fours. With lots of three-wide and multi-groove racing occurring throughout the night, Jason VandeKamp and Tommy Bawden were WISSOTA-sanctioned winners, while Dan Ebert topped the Modifieds.

Jake Smith and Ashton Schulte led the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to green for the first feature of the night, with Smith claiming the immediate lead. A couple cautions occurred in the first handful of laps, but Smith continued to show the way.

As the drivers again raced under the green flag, they were three wide for positions. Smith was in command, but VandeKamp kept after the No. 21. Lucas Rodin bobbled in the turn, allowing David Swearingen to pick up a spot, with Rodin still close behind.

With a handful laps left, VandeKamp was alongside Smith to his outside. VandeKamp took the lead with four laps to go, and ended up with the win. Smith, Rodin, Ashton Schulte and Denis Czech rounded out the top-five spots.

WISSOTA Mod Fours were next up for the night, led to the green flag by Robert Holtquist and Blake Hawker. They battled for the point as the green waved, and at the end of lap one, Hawker claimed the spot. Holtquist raced alongside Hawker, with Tommy Bawden closing in. Robert Holtquist retook the lead with Bawden now in second and Tyler Larson in third.

With laps passing, Bawden raced to Holtquist’s door, and after a short battle, took the lead. Bawden pulled away from the field before the yellow waved and reset the field.

Bawden brought the drivers back to green while Hawker, Larson and Dustin Holtquist fought for second. Larson snagged the spot and looked ahead to Bawden, but Dustin Holtquist had other plans and stole the runner-up position. With only four laps to go, Holtquist attempted to catch Bawden, but Bawden drove on to the win. Dustin Holtquist settled for second with Larson, Luke Erlandson and Hawker in third through fifth.

The Modifieds were the final feature of the night with the USMTS taking on WISSOTA-legal Modifieds for a 30-lap event. Dan Ebert was the early leader, as drivers battled three and nearly four wide around the Big O; the top-runners began to navigate lapped traffic. Jake Timm caught and passed Ebert in the traffic, but Ebert kept Timm in his sights. Rodney Sanders put pressure on Ebert for second, with Jake O’Neil close behind.

As the race progressed, contact occurred between Timm and a lapped car, with Timm sent to the back. Ebert assumed the lead for the restart, as Sanders and Ebert separated from the field.

Following a late-race yellow, Ebert sped away while Sanders, O’Neil and Jim Chisholm were three wide for second. Chisholm dropped low alongside Ebert to vie for the lead, however Ebert proved successful and took the victory. Chisholm, Sanders, Jake O’Neil and Kyle Brown completed the top five.
