Now, down to feature time. First up were the Mid Mods led to the green flag for the 20-lap main. On the pole was Gavin Paull, flanked by the No. 15 of James Vendela. It was a furious 20 laps with Vendela taking the point and flying to the win over Paul Ripley. Paull finished third ahead of David Simpson, who started fourth and finished there. Rounding out the top five was the No. 33 of Cole Boston, who started in 12th.

I must mention that there was a serious accident in the first and second turn when the No. 17 of Ashley Boyum flipped the car landing on its top. Apparently, according to a friend, she didn’t sustain any injuries. It looked like a mess from where I was sitting on the frontstretch, but the cage seemed to work. Apparently they were having a difficult time extracting her from the car, as when you are up-side-down the belts get really tight. You have to be careful when you release them, or you’ll fall on your head and probably injure your neck!

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks Cole Chernosky took the win from the pole. Second was Rick Simpson ahead of DJ Keeler, Kyle Copp and Doug Koski in fifth.

Next up it was the WISSOTA Late Model 25-lap feature, which was won by former Modified star Kevin Eder from Ashland (now Cameron). He came from the fifth starting spot to take the win. Following him was early race leader Skeeter Estey, as well as Pat Doar, who came from ninth, Jeff Massingill and Billy Kendall.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were the final noisy race cars of WISSOTA for the night. Brandon Copp started on the front row in second and maintained the lead flag to flag for the win. Jody Bellefeuille moved forward from his eighth starting spot to finish second, but it was too late to catch Copp before the 20-lap event was over. Brady Uotinen moved from fifth to third at the end. Canadian John Toppozini dropped back from the pole and finished fourth, while Jack Rivord moved five spots forward to finish fifth.

Racing ended with the features for the Pure Stocks and Hornets. The Pure Stocks were won by Jessie Treviranus, who beat dad Tom Treviranus to the line by a couple car lengths. In the Hornets, perennial winner DeJay Jarecki grabbed the victory ahead of A.J. House.

A few interesting tidbits:

Johnny Broking left the Modified at home and showed up with a Late Model. He finished fourth in the second heat and finished eighth in the feature from the 11th starting spot.

I was really happy to see 22 WISSOTA Late Models on hand for opening day. It may have something to do with the upcoming KME Late Model Series.

Saturday, June 1

We were sitting here at home on Saturday when we got a message the races at ABC Raceway were cancelled, so we looked at each other and I said, Let’s go to Rice Lake!

It was a nice day when we got there and when we went up to our booth, the only member of our group there was Steve Robbins from Spooner.

There were 53 WISSOTA racers on the grounds, plus 18 of the Northern Vintage Stockcars in competition.

There were only nine WISSOTA Modifieds in play, and the feature was won by Nick Oreskovich ahead of Brady Uotinen. Rounding out the top five were Travis Anderson, Joe Chaplin and Brent Prochnow.

There were 10 cars in the Mid Mods. Following the disqualification of the original winner, Cody Cimfl, Jake Stai was the winner ahead of Jimmy Latvala, Mike Schnider, Superior’s Jesse Polson and Mike Grover in the top five.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks showed 16 entries, with Mike Tuma getting the win over Amundson and Loew in the top three. Fourth was Cole Richards and fifth was Danny Richards.

The WISSOTA Pure Stocks had the largest turnout of cars with 17 entries. Dusten Holub won the 12-lap feature ahead of Rob Grabon, Jake Smith, Trenten Holub and Brent Mindock in the top five.

It was a full night of racing extended a bit due to the fact that the track had to be reworked during intermission, as it had turned rough during the heats. But, we were still home by 11.

Sunday June 2

Sunday, June 2 was a busy one at Proctor Speedway, as the Vintage clan followed us from Rice Lake the night prior to put on a show for the fans. It was also the Old Timers picnic, and Hall of Fame inductions, as well as a full day of activities and night of racing.

Proctor drew exactly the same number of WISSOTA cars as we did at GLS on Friday, 83 in competition.

In the 25-lap Late Model feature, Burdick pulled off the win over Jeff Massingill and Jeff Provinzino, while Danny Vang and Tim McMann finished fourth and fifth.

In the 20-lap Modified feature, Jody Bellefeuille drove to the win over Oreskovich, while Tyler Vernon, Brady Uotinen and Brandon Copp finished in the top five.

Shawn McFadden won the Super Stock feature with Rick Simpson second, while Darin Meierotto, Doug Koski and Kyle Copp rounded out the top five.

David Simpson was the winner in the Midwest Mods over Latvala, Tyler Vernon, Jason VandeKamp and Cory Jorgensen of Duluth in fifth.

In the WISSOTA Pure Stocks Chaston Finckbone took the top spot ahead of Aaron Bernick, Shelton, Eric Crosby and Jake Smith.

The final feature of the night was won by A.J.House over Carson Gotelaere, DJ Jarecki, Puidokas and Justin Houck, both of them from Cloquet.

The track held up very well and the racing was good for the most part.

A few things to check before I finish up.

The Fastlane Motorsports Northland Super Stock Series has renamed their four regional battles as well as the hard charger champion for the 2024 campaign.

The Badger Battle will be known as Todd Huhn’s Badger Battle, and it will be Lois Schwarzkopf’s Gopher Battle. The northern Battle will be known as the Charlie Klick’s North Battle, and the South Battle will be known as the Rick Hallquist’s South Battle.

And finally, drivers will be competing for Arianna’s Hard Charger Point Championship. The renaming honors those who were big supporters of the Super Sock Series.

Finally, I mentioned that James Vendela had set a new Midwest Modified track record last Friday; it now stands at 17.798 seconds for the 4/10ths mile oval.

Hopefully all will go well and we will get in some races in the coming weeks.
