Peterlin, Sabraski, Nelson, Simpson, Smith and McLynn create some Thursday Thunder at Grand Rapids prior to arrival of widespread rain

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (June 20) - As many tracks entered a long weekend of rainouts, Grand Rapids Speedway got one past Mother Nature and completed a full night of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series racing Thursday night, June 20.

Taking home the trophies at the end of the night were drivers Kyle Peterlin (Late Models), Shane Sabraski (Modifieds), Dustin Nelson (Super Stocks), David Simpson (Midwest Mods), Tristen McLynn (Hornets) and Jake Smith (Pure Stocks).

Darrin Lawler and Mervin Castle III led the field to the green flag in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods for their 20-lap feature. Lawler moved out front to complete lap one, followed by Mikey Blevins, David Simpson, Castle and Blake Adams in the top five. Just one lap later, Blevins was out in front, as Lawler was under heavy pressure from Simpson and Castle, who were side by side for third, and Joey Jensen displaced Adams for fifth. With four laps complete the yellow fell across the field for a spun racer.

Blevins led the field back to green, while Lawler retained second. It was three wide for third, with Simpson slipping into the position after Castle was crossed up. One lap later, Simpson drove by Blevins into the lead, bringing Jensen along with him into second. Lawler and Adams battled hard for fourth.

Jensen was right on the bumper of Simpson before the field was brought to a halt once again for another spin around the halfway point.

Simpson led the field to the green flag, with heavy pressure from Jensen in second. Blevins was third, Lawler was fourth and Castle was back up to fifth before another spin brought the action to a stop.

On the ensuing restart, Simpson and Jensen were back at it for first, with Blevins under pressure from Castle for third.

As the laps wound down, Jensen searched the track for a way by Simpson. As Simpson began to navigate lapped traffic, Jensen closed in once again, but could not find enough momentum to get by. Simpson took the win ahead of Jensen, Castle, Mikey Blevins and Sam Blevins in the top five.

Dustin Nelson was the early leader in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, followed by Andy LaBarge, D.J. Keeler and Matt Sparby up front in its earliest stages. Sparby was displaced about two laps later to fifth by Curt Myers.

Out front, Nelson continued to have a healthy advantage over LaBarge at the halfway point, while Keeler was third. Dalton Carlson was fourth and was feeling the heat from Myers. Keeler began to reel in LaBarge for second, as the front of the field began to work its way through backmarkers. A caution brought the field back together.

Nelson led the field to the green with five laps to go, with LaBarge and Keeler in row two and Dalton Carlson and Sparby behind in row three. Nelson took off again into the top spot, followed by LaBarge, Keeler, Carlson and Max Dondelinger, who got by Sparby to crack the top five.

Nelson, who was celebrating his 50th birthday, drove off to victory in the race’s waning stages. LaBarge, Keeler, Carlson and Dondelinger completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Late Models, Johnny Broking and Harry Hanson were the front row for the start of the their 20-lapper. Broking jumped out to the early lead, with Hanson in second. After a couple of laps, Peterlin, who started eighth, was already into third using the highside, getting by Hanson shortly afterward. Peterlin blew by Broking along the high line, and immediately pulled away from the No. 45. Shane Sabraski moved into third, ahead of Hanson, and Ben Heinle was fifth.

With more than half the race complete, Broking began to feel the heat from Sabraski. Sabraski was able to pull even in the turns with Broking, but did not have enough to complete the pass.

Out front, Peterlin drove to the win, with Broking nipping Sabraski for second. Ben Heinle was fourth and Hanson fifth.

A short group of WISSOTA Modifieds were led early on by Charlie Castle, though he was under heavy pressure from Sabraski. One lap later Sabraski got by into the lead, and Bob Broking drove by Ryan Jensen for third.

Shane Sabraski (Melissa Pickett Photo)

As the Modfiieds spread out around the track, Sabraski remained out front with a healthy lead ahead of Castle, Broking, Jensen, and Josh Beaulieau. With one lap to go, Broking was right on the bumper of Castle. With Sabraski taking the checkered flag, Broking stole the second-place honors from Castle at the line. Jensen and Beaulieau were top-five finishers.

Billy Binkley was the early leader of the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature. They were three wide behind the leader for second with a handful of laps scored; Jake Smith shook out into second, Dustin Puffe was third and Chaston Finckbone was in the mix as well before a yellow regrouped the field.

Following the restart, Binkley led the field to green, ahead of Puffe, Smith, and Finckbone in the top four. Puffe and Smith were side by side for second, with Finckbone just to the outside for the spot as well. Puffe drove by Binkley to the lead, with Finckbone side by side for the spot to complete the next lap. Smith then shot to the inside and drove by both into the lead. Finckbone was second, and Puffe was third ahead of Binkley.

Jake Smith (Melissa Pickett Photo)

With just a couple of laps left, Finckbone tried high and low to get by Smith. Farther back Binkley was spun to the infield and the caution fell, setting up a green, white, checkered finish.

Smith took off into the lead, as Finckbone and Puffe traded elbows for second. Smith drove to the victory ahead of Finckbone and Puffe in the top three, with Ethan Elhardt fourth and Binkley fifth.

After two early cautions before any laps could be completed, Kole Kampsen was the leader in the WISSOTA Hornets. With just two laps complete, another caution brought the field back together. Another caution one lap later kept them at a stop-and-go pace.

Kampsen led the following restart, ahead of Payson Patrin and Tristen McLynn in the top three.

Lapped traffic just past the halfway point was a risky endeavor, and held up Kampsen, which shuffled him back through the top five. McLynn took over out front, with Patrin behind in second. Derek Ament was third, and Kampsen settled into fourth.

With the checkered flag in the air, McLynn grabbed the victory. Patrin was second, Kampsen regrouped for third, Ament was fourth and McKenna Folstad completed the top five.
