Broking, Wood, LaBarge, Castle and Lefler lock up Saturday night feature wins at Hibbing Raceway
HIBBING, MN (June 8) - Saturday night, June 8 Hibbing Raceway hosted United Way Veterans Night at the speedway, and WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners on the night included Mervin Castle III, Johnny Broking, Tristan LaBarge, Jeffrey Wood and Michael Lefler.
In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Sam Blevins was the early leader. Mervin Castle III took over second one lap later, as the field was two and three wide for top 10 spots behind them. A caution for a spun racer brought the field back together.
Sam Blevins led the charge back out front for the restart with three laps scored. Castle held second, with Mikey Blevins, Jr. and Mike Blevins, Sr. in third and fourth in a No. 10 foursome. Another caution regrouped the field with six laps scored. The caution fell once again for a spun racer in turn four during the restart, and after a delay for the sun setting, the story was the same on the next go-round, and the subsequent restart after that.
There were still just six laps in the books when the field was ready for the next attempt at green flag racing, and following the restart Sam Blevins was back out to a strong lead. Behind him, Castle slowly chipped away at Blevins’ advantage as the laps passed by, and was within striking range as Sam moved through lapped traffic two wide ahead of him with just three laps to go.
One lap later, Castle dove to the inside of Sam and drove by down the backstretch, using a lapped car to his advantage in turn four and hanging on to garner the win. Sam Blevins, 14th-starter Mike Blevins, Mikey Blevins and Dylan Miller were top-five finishers.
Kevin Salin was the early leader in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, before Tristan LaBarge got by one lap later. Andy LaBarge was third and began to close in on Salin, making the pass for second soon after.
With five laps scored, Tristan LaBarge had a several-car-length lead on his cousin Andy. A caution regrouped the field a couple laps later.
Tristan led the restart, with Andy close behind in second. It was two and three wide behind them for the remaining top five spot before another caution reset the field.
Following the restart, Tristan held his spot out front, under heavy pressure from Andy who had jumped to the high side. Austin Blom was third, Mikey Vajdl was fourth and Robert Lore in the top five.
Andy was making the outside line work, pulling even with Tristan several times over the remaining laps. Tristan held on however, and took the checkered flag ahead of Andy. Vajdl, Blom and Lore completed the top five.
Billy Kendall was the early leader in the WISSOTA Late Models as a battle broke out between Keith Niemi and Skeeter Estey for second; Derek Vesel was fourth. A handful of laps into the race, Kendall began to catch the back of the field, and drivers were two-by-two ahead of him. A caution for Zach Wohlers reset the field with nine laps in, and gave Kendall clean air for the restart.
Kendall continued to lead out front, ahead of Estey. On the move was Johnny Broking, who continued to search the track for a line by Estey, before the caution fell once again for Zach Wohlers with 12 to go.
Kendall led the field back to green, as Broking got by Estey to complete the lap and then passed Kendall two turns later.
Through two more cautions, Broking held on to take the victory, his first Late Model win at Hibbing Raceway. Vesel was second, ninth-starter Danny Vang finished third, Estey was fourth, and Kendall completed the top five.
In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Jeffrey Wood was the early leader ahead of Duane Dale and Jeff Wood in the top three. Bob Broking got by Jeff Wood about a lap later for third, and then passed Dale for second a couple of laps after that.
With Jeffrey Wood out front by more than two seconds with seven laps in, Broking began to reel in the leader as he tried to navigate lapped traffic, gaining about a tenth to two-tenths of a second each lap. A lapped car spun in front of Broking, but Broking was able to avoid the spun racer and continued on as the field fell under yellow.
Jeffrey Wood led the field back to green, as Mack Estey zipped along the low side into third and began a side-by-side battle with Bob Broking for second, trading the spot seemingly in each turn. Dale was close behind in fourth and Andrew Inman cracked the top five.
Jeffrey Wood drove on to the victory, with Broking holding onto second. Ninth-starter Estey was third, Dale was fourth, and Inman rounded out the top five.
In the WISSOTA Hornets, Addison LaBarge led the field early on, before Michael Lefler took over in his bright yellow No. 33. Jada Lore also got by Addison LaBarge into second.
Lefler and Lore put on quite a distance over the remaining laps, with Lefler taking the victory. Lore had the misfortune of being hit by a lapped car during the white flag lap, and as she tried to recover lost significant ground on the field. McKenna Folstad overtook second, Addison LaBarge was third, Lore was fourth, and Calvin Skaja completed the top five.
