Heinzerling and Larson load up as winners following Casper Speedway action Friday
By Ed Haller
CASPER, WY (May 6) - Following a snow-out on Friday night, Casper Speedway dusted itself off and welcomed the 2024 WISSOTA Dirt Track Series with action in the Midwest Modifieds and Mod Fours.
Winners included Matt Heinzerling and Dean Larson.
In the Midwest Mods, Heinzerling parlayed his pole starting spot into a feature victory. Heinzerling led the field to the green with Travis Soper starting on the outside pole. Shawn Reed returned to action at Casper Speedway for the 2024 season, bringing the fans along with him, and started third. Heinzerling pulled out to an early lead, with Reed taking over second from Soper. Jake Bosch got by perennial front-runner Rick Chorniak for fourth, with Anthony Peterson back in sixth. As the field settled into the rhythm of the race, Heinzerling drove off to the eventual victory. He was followed to the checkered flag by Shawn Reed, Travis Soper, Jake Bosch, and Rick Chorniak.
As western WISSOTA’s favorite racing season visitor, Larson added to his early win total with another in the Mod Fours. Shelli Lind led the field of six cars to the green flag with Mike Lind starting on the outside pole. It took no time for Larson to grab the lead and continue his dominating ways at the half-mile oval. Glenn Asmus was able to slice his way through the field to join Larson at the front for a spirited battle to the checkered, with Larson once again triumphant. Asmus, Dax Reher, Shelli Lind and Mike Lind complete the top five.
Paige Asmus also debuted in this feature, in the No. 14 mount previously piloted by Chris Haley.
In the track’s other action, Jeff Cooper took top honors in the Modifieds, Mike Matlock won the battle with Russ Dalgarn in the Hobby Stocks, Tom Asmus took the checkered flag in the Dwarfs, and Lane Owens won the Sport Compact feature. Finally, Jim Reiter stole the show in the Rocky Mtn. Hard Tops.
