Rieck rallies late, Rossow wins a close one and Broksieck, Thomas and Peterson score Sunday night Casino cash

WATERTOWN, SD (May 19) - Derek Rieck made a late-race pass to nab the Midwest Modified victory at Casino Speedway on Sunday night. Bradley Rossow was awarded the Hornet win after a dramatic finish, while Tyler Peterson, Joe Thomas and Maria Broksieck displayed dominant performances in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action.

Scott Hansen grabbed the lead over Chad Williamson on the first lap of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event. Todd Stark moved in to battle his teammate for second, but Rieck raced by both No. 54s to steal the runner-up spot by lap four. Rieck chipped away at Hansen’s advantage, and had the gap down to about five car lengths halfway through the 20-lap race. Mike Nichols was into fourth, and raced to the inside of Stark in a battle for third.

Rieck continued to hug the inside of the speedway, and closed in on Hansen, who was committed to the high groove. Rieck was nearly even with the leader on lap 16, which forced Hansen to change his line in turns three and four. Rieck started high, then cut low out of turn four and narrowly edged out Hansen to lead lap 18. Rieck had a bigger margin under the white flag, but a slower car in the low groove gave Hansen one last bit of hope. As Rieck entered in the middle of turn one and slowly moved up, Hansen tagged the outside wall, and Rieck easily cleared the slower machine and raced to the win. Hansen settled for second in the caution-free race, with Stark third, Mike Nichols fourth and Tommy Nichols fifth.

Bradley Rossow and Brayden Begalka battled tooth and nail the entire distance of the 12-lap WISSOTA Hornet main event. They spent the first lap neck and neck before Rossow moved out to a slim lead. When Rossow’s pink machine showed a puff of smoke on lap six, Begalka made another run to the leader’s outside, but could not find the speed to make the pass.

On the final lap, Begalka drove hard through turns one and two, and caught the rear bumper of Rossow at the corner exit. They raced seemingly connected down the back chute, and Begalka drove deep into turn three, which sent Rossow sideways. Begalka drove around the outside of Rossow to cross the line first, however officials quickly deemed the apparent winner had committed a rough-driving penalty, and was relegated to the rear of the running order.

Rossow was restored to his position, and rolled into victory lane as the winner. Adam VanDerostyne was second, Nathan Telkamp was third, Josh Gebhart was fourth and Begalka was credited with a fifth-place finish.

Tyler Peterson (Cody Papke Photo)

David Carlson and Chuck Swenson battled door to door over the opening lap of the WISSOTA Late Model main event. Swenson slipped high on lap two and Carlson secured the lead, while Trevor Anderson slipped under Swenson for second. Tyler Peterson advanced to third early, and looked for the runner-up spot when Anderson tested the high groove. Anderson shut the door on Peterson down low, and Peterson switched to the vacant high groove; he passed Anderson for second on lap seven, and grabbed the top spot from Carlson on lap eight. Peterson set sail at the head of the pack, while Lee Grosz attempted a high-side rally of his own. Grosz raced around Anderson for third on lap 12 before a lapped machine caused a scramble for second on lap 15. Anderson and Grosz both slid by Carlson for position before the first caution flag dropped with 10 laps to go.

Peterson pulled away from the pack, and Anderson secured second a few laps after the restart. A four pack of cars battled for third for most of the final 10 laps with Carlson primarily turning back the challengers. Peterson had over a straightaway lead in the dominant victory, and Anderson finished a solid second. Carlson won the battle for third with Jayson Good fourth, while Chad Becker moved by Grosz in the final turn for fifth.

Joseph Thomas (Cody Papke Photo)

Thomas outdueled Tony Konold to lead the opening lap of the WISSOTA Modified feature, and maintained the point to a lap three caution. Bryce Borgen worked the inside groove, and grabbed second from Konold a few laps after the restart. Konold stayed closed on the cushion, and both drivers ran within striking distance of the leader. Thomas started to extend his lead before the halfway mark of the 20-lap race, and Konold worked his way into second once again on lap 11.

A caution waved with 15 laps scored, and Konold’s machine locked up on the restart, which brought another caution for his sideways car on the front chute; he restarted at the tail, but quickly dropped from competition.

Borgen stayed with Thomas for a couple laps in the five-lap dash to the finish, but ultimately fell into the grips of Mike Stearns in the last pair of circuits. Thomas, the defending track champion, collected the feature win while Stearns cleared Borgen out of turn two on the final lap to finish runner-up. Borgen barely held off Cayden Schmeling to secure the final podium position, and Garrett Gross rounded out the top five.

Maria Broksieck (Cody Papke Photo)

Broksieck started on the pole and never entertained a challenge for the win in the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Andy Rossow grabbed second from Tony Miller on the opening lap, and Wade Tirrel moved to third after an early restart, but Chris Serr was the next driver to claim third a few laps later. Broksieck had a big lead when Rossow slowed to a stop and brought out a caution on lap five.

Serr settled into second after the restart, and Jason Marko supplanted Tirrel for third. Marko was all over Serr for second until the final caution with just a few laps to go. Broksieck continued her charge to the checkers and grabbed the seemingly easy victory. Serr pulled away from Marko in the closing laps, and Marko fended off Miller for third. Tirrel rounded out the top five.

Bodie Croninger had a big lead early in the 15-lap Gen X Late Model feature, but Curt Kranz tracked him down and snagged the spot with a lap-eight pass on the cushion. Kranz moved to the bottom lane, allowing a late-race, high-side charge from Trevor Walsh. After a restart with three laps remaining, Walsh stole the lead and scored the win ahead of Kranz, Tony Croninger, Bodie Croninger and Scott Harrington, who started last on the nine-car field.
